Having followed the Retrofit Lab bi-xenon thread with interest, and with no current solution in place as informed by Daan Zwart (of Retrofit Lab), I'm going to replace my OEM low beam HIDs with a quality aftermarket kit in the meantime because the OEMs really are a bag of poo

My headlights have been rubbish for ages and no amount of polishing the lens or replacing with so-called bright halogens has really helped.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Having followed the Retrofit Lab bi-xenon thread with interest, and with no current solution in place as informed by Daan Zwart (of Retrofit Lab), I'm going to replace my OEM low beam HIDs with a quality aftermarket kit in the meantime because the OEMs really are a bag of poo I've narrowed it down to this hids4U product: https://www.hids4u.co.uk/D2R-D2S-HIDS4U-Stealth-35W-Xenon-HID-Conversion-Kit.html or an equivalent from hids-direct.co.uk Does anyone on here have any experience of either, or alternatives? As for the high beam, I'll fit a separate fast start H11 HID kit

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update: Retrofitlab said that this will fit: https://www.retrofitlab.com/en/porsche-911-9962-2002-2005-xenon-headlights.html Just waiting for confirmation that there is no trimming/cutting of the reflector required to fit this The HID info would still be useful though Thanks

POST 3Original post

Hi, have you considered these? https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www....WX2.amp/x-tremeultinon-led-car-headlight-bulb I have them in my 996.2 and are easily just as bright as my 986.2 which has factory litronics and maintains the beam pattern perfectly, no worries about blinding people and with the added advantage of if an MOT tester doesn't want to let them slide as technically both aftermarket LEDs and HIDs are illegal it is a simple as switching to a regular bulb come MOT time then back again.

POST 4Original post

There is a guy on the 928 email list that supplies those LED direct fit bulbs to the 928 owners. Not all will fit as there needs to be room for the heatsink at the back of the headlight. Obviously this is a particular issue on the 928 because of the pop-up headlights. Woodypeck - http://www.woodypeck.ipage.com/

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've had limited success with (albeit cheaper) LED bulbs in the past (for my motorbike). My preference would be HIDs

http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=137433&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=40 Have a read through this ^^^^ Edit sorry just saw you'd read this! Hopefully useful for others so I'll leave the link.

POST 7Original post

I agree in regards to the cheap LEDs they are worthless and distort the beam pattern but the Philips are a different animal and fit in the 996 headlight with no modification and the cover leaves plenty of room for the heat sink. Just you don't have the heat issues of HID's, no ballasts to fit and will last around 15 years of daily use. Cheap LED's give LED swaps a bad name but the decent stuff like Philips and Osram supply I highly rate as a improvement over HID kits.

POST 8Original post

I put a hids4u kit on my Boxster which had projectors and they were fantastic. Amazing light output and good colour as well. On my 996 I looked at converting to projectors but it looks a faff to far for me and I put some Ring upgraded bulbs in and they are surprisingly good.

POST 9Original post

My headlights have been rubbish for ages and no amount of polishing the lens or replacing with so-called bright halogens has really helped. So I bit the bullet and ordered a set of the Philips LEDs above. Fitted them last night and - yeah. Big difference. Also, very very easy to fit. No modifications required, you don't need to drill any holes in the light housing, and if you get new bulb holders (these are perfect https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-H7-L...578577?hash=item3fe1767d51:g:XHwAAOSwNIhesWyG ) you can swap back to halogens in five minutes. I'm no expert but the beam pattern looks lower, more focussed, and more penetrating than the halogens, and on a quick 10-mile jaunt last night certainly gave better visibility on unlit roads. I guess we'll see how it goes and if the car passes its MOT next month - but so far it's a thumbs up from me. Before & after pics - the tape on the wall gives the approximate position of the halogen spread:

Do the Philips LEDs throw any canbus bulb monitoring errors? Ian

POST 11Original post

I've just fitted the Retrofitlab HID projector kit into my non Lintronic 996.2 headlights. The low beam and high beam performance is significantly improved. Quite literally night and day.

POST 12Original post

No idea if you'd expect to see any or not, but I certainly can't see an anything obvious on the dash.

POST 13Original post

Are the ones you fitted about £30? Just so I know I'm looking at the right ones on eBay.

POST 14Original post

The LEDs? No, not by a long shot. The Philips retail for about £120 the pair. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MMTRRZ1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Ok great thanks. Though that was the case, just making sure.
