Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The exhaust design wasn't changed until the facelift.
Leading evidence: 'Replace until the facelift' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check 10th digit of the vin' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
You can retrofit cruise to a non-eGas car (I did it on my C2) but it's a marathon, as it uses a separate actuator which actually pulls the throttle cable mechanically.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
Looking for some expertise if I may.
Could anyone confirm the differences between 1999 and 2000 model 996s please?
I have mine up for sale and people keep ringing me up offering silly money and saying that they can get a 1998/99 which "looks the same" for less money!
It would be good if I could respond with with some hard facts which might explain why they should pay a bit more for mine
I think the main ones are:
Smaller boot levers (electronic ones)
PSM?
Softer materials in the interior
New exhaust increasing power from 296 to 300
Much obliged

Changes for Model Year 2000 Porsche included the adoption of Motronic 7.2 (eGas) to all Carrera models, and the
option
of PSM on C2 models.. In
2001
the luggage and engine compartment lids became electrically operated. The exhaust design wasn't changed until the facelift.
If your car is a late-build 2000 (after 1st Sept), it is actually MY2001. Check the 10th digit of the VIN. If it's a "1", then it is MY01.
A friend of mine was in the market to buy a car similar to yours a few years ago. On the top of his wish-list was Cruise Control (the reasons eacape me now) and I seem to remember he would only entertain year 2000 and younger cars, even if they
didn't
have cruise control as it was a simple task to retro-fit to these cars.
On cars older than year 2000, the cruise retro-fit was a much more complicated and expensive procedure. As Richard H has made mention, the Motronic engine management was revised for year 2000, this is maybe why it was more versatile for cruise control etc...
I just thought I'd throw this one in - I doubt it helps much though :dont know:
That's exactly the reason. On eGas cars the cruise control system is already built in to the DME and Instrument Cluster, so it only needs wiring up and activating.
You can retrofit cruise to a non-eGas car (I did it on my C2) but it's a marathon, as it uses a separate actuator which actually pulls the throttle cable mechanically.
People that ring up telling you what theu can get other cars for are generally wasting your time!!! If serious they would know that it is the car and not the year that matters, if it ws the other way round you could pick up a 993 for a couple of k and that just wont happen!!! Sell the car not the year. 911's aint like buying and selling a focus or mondeo, IMO its just people testing you to try and get a deal!!!
Two things come to mind as an identifcation of 2000 model -v- pre-2000 models:
No 1. The 2000 model had a Silver Porsche crest in the horn push as aposed to the coloured. This was to celebrate the millenium.
No 2. The pre 2000 had cable operated throttle bodies which became fly-by-wire in the year 2000.
I think you may be confusing the 986 (Boxster), that had electric boot openers at 2000 but as Richard pointed out the 996 did not get this option until late 2001 easily idenified by the face-lift which had a whole long list of changes.
