Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I have had to use a grinder on the bolts but have now got them off.
Leading evidence: 'Use grinder' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use grinder' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have brought my dream 911.....It has a switchable sports exhaust on it.
And it rattles, so i removed the bumper and found the rattle to be the valve that control the butterfly within the switchable valve.
I have decided to remove the backbox to get this looked at.
I have had to use a grinder on the bolts but have now got them off.
However i cannot get the backbox off due to the 2 long bolts that are inthe main support bracket housing.
They need to be pushed up and out and i cannot push them up due to the bolts hitting the car body. :nooo:
How do you remove the backbox?
You can see the bracket on this picture. These are 2 bolts i cannot remove. And hence the back box wont come off the car.
996 exhaust
I would imagine you must drop the engine slightly but I dont know for sure, what I would like to know though is what the rattle sounded like. I have a 996 with sports exhaust and I have this sort of rattle type squeak and I think its my exhaust, it sounds like a dry bearing but I know its not, and the noise disappears once the engine is hot, its like a dry brake disc when you initially start off, mnay thanks Mike
I made this mistake once too!
Spent about 7 hours on my back with a dremel trying to remove them! :frustrated:
You dont need to remove those bolts holding the brackets, you just need to remove the 3 bolts on the side of the brackets themselves and then the boxes will just slide down (assuming you remove the brackets that connect the mufflers to the cats as well
)
those 2 bolts you are referring too just hold the boxes/mufflers to the brackets which you dont need to remove in order to get the back boxes off.
Hope this makes sense
Exactly as flyingbanana says. I too spent an age trying to get them out only to discover they have no function other than to hold the exhaust to the mounting bracket.
