Leading evidence: 'Disconnect "quiet" function so it always sounds the same' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check nhp and speedtech' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
I would highly recommend for sound you adding an aftermarket X pipe to your PSE.

Suggestion
I will tell you if you switch to the x-pipe with PSE the exhaust note will change from the deep sound to a higher pitch almost GT3-like sound.

*also to note, burbbles come from the ECU running the car "rich" which can actually rob you of horsepower.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi fellow Porsche fans!
Hope you are well. I have a 2004 c4s with pse which I do love but i was wondering if there was anything i could modify to get more burble sounds and rumble on throttle lift off? I just purchases the schnell red hose but i doubt that will add much to the burbles.
thanks much!
leon
the "burbles" come from ECU tuning.... I assume you are trying to get the sound of the cayman GTS when it lets off the throttle?
-I have Aftermarket High Flow cats and mufflers and I only get about 1-2 burble when I let off.
Thank you. Do you have any suggestions to which type of ecu tuning to get those nice burbles?
Did the cats make a big difference with increasing exhaust sound for you?
thanks!
leon
Get on the recent group buy post for 200 cell cats. You wont get much more burble but the PSE with 200 cell cats makes very racey exhaust note with no drone.
It took 2 hours in a garage to swap both my and my best friends midpipes out..... we only have emissions every two years in Colorado and we spend 4 hours every two years to swap back to stock and pass emissions and put the cats or catless x pipe back on... not a big deal in the grand scheme of things really.
*also to note, burbbles come from the ECU running the car "rich" which can actually rob you of horsepower. It isn't worth loosing horsepower to have a few crackles and burbles. Most sports car companies are mastering the art of "burbles" from the factory right now, but those cars are also running rich (However, the sports car world is actually demanding burbbles like yourself)
- Ford Focus RS
-Jaguar F-type
-Cayman GTS
-ECT....
thanks for the info and explanation! Which cats do you and your friend have?? And it did in fact add some additional loudness and burbles?
thanks,
leon
My friend is running the very exotic, high end IPE full exhaust system with catless X pipe.
I am running aftermarket 200 Cell High flow cats (but not the X pipe design)
We both get a few burbles when letting off the gas, However prior to IPE he had PSE with my 200 cell high flow cats and his car did not burble. IT was quite a bit louder than just PSE and sounded fantastic. The burbbles just were not there.
I would highly recommend for sound you adding an aftermarket X pipe to your PSE. You will drool over the sound.
I will tell you if you switch to the x-pipe with PSE the exhaust note will change from the deep sound to a higher pitch almost GT3-like sound.
Note sure if that's what you're after but I wanted to make you aware of it. I have some exhaust videos floating around here on Rennlist if you do a search and you can hear what my PSE with Fabspeed x-pipes (with cats) sounds like.
Any chance you can one of those videos here? I've been looking for awhile for a video of a stock PSE with 200 cell cats, but most videos are either of a catless xpipe or the car also has headers.
Thanks a ton for the info! Just getting into modding my c4s 996 and people on here have all been so nice and informative.
first up, b and m ssk and a new shift ****.
then next??
Wow time flies - I did this back in 2012!

Let me know if you have any questions on the setup. Also note on my PSE the previous owner disconnected the "quiet" function so it always sounds the same.
The PSE is considered by many ( and myself ) to be a great sounding exhaust .... Since your car has it what you may as well consider is to add a switch to the PSE relay so you can have the PSE Sports Sound at all times ( and still be able to deactivate the PSE exhaust from the central console switch if you have it ) , makes a hell of a difference as it keeps the sports mode on for the entire rev range . I have done this mode at a spare PSE relay i got , pretty good fun but i prefer the standard PSE operation as its too loud for me if on at all times .....
I think what you're getting at is disabling the factory mode that silences PSE at lower speeds even when PSE is on, right? I don't remember the exact speeds, but it's something like 25-50kph that silences PSE due to EU regs in some countries. Not necessary to install a switch on the relay, just simply snip one diode and presto, you have PSE that is actually on 100% of the time that you have the console switch turned on, and of course you can still toggle off with the console switch. If you have PSE and haven't done this, I highly recommend it.
Exactly. I have the PSE and I have done the spare relay mod with a switch on it , liked it at first but a bit too noisy for me so i have put back an un modified PSE relay and kept the modded one aside.
On mine the previous owner had removed the relay to quiet the system. Once I realized I liked the loud sound I then removed the actuators and vacuum lines from the system. I still have them in a box of spare parts in case I ever want to quiet the car down but I didn't want unnecessary parts just sitting in the car if they weren't being used.
Yes it's a bit loud but I got used to it and I like the personality of the vehicle with the loud pipes.
Thanks! Sounds very unique compared to a stock 996 system. As mentioned above it is loud so I even have to start the car in the morning with my garage door closed as I don't want to disturb my neighbors. But it is a performance vehicle and I like the way the car barks at higher RPM!
PSE mufflers are sought after as will valves open they provide very similar sound potential as the popular Gundo/Fister modified mufflers. I would suggest keeping them for their mild/wild potential and upgrading further upstream. If you are after burble/overrun, you are going to have to ditch the factory cats. On the plus side, this is the biggest restriction point on the car so you will gain a noticeable amount of performance, especially if you get an ECU tune to maximize the performance potential while shutting off the imminent CEL from deleting the cats. PM heading your way, we can chat about the options if you'd like
