Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Hello everyone, I am the proud owner of a 2008 Cayman S in Arctic Silver. It is my first Porsche and have been loving it for the last 2 weeks. That is until this morning when I started it and the "Check Engine" light came on telling me to visit the workshop. The car sounded fine. I restarted a couple of times to see whether it was some glitch in the light, but it came on every time. I drove a different car then as I didn't have time to deal with it today. I guess I'll take it to the dealer to have it checked out, but this doesn't instill a lot of confidence for me in my new car...

POST 2Original post

Same thing happened to mine after 1600 miles. It was a catalytic converter failure and A/C expansion valve problem. They fixed it and haven't had a problem since. Try not to worry.

POST 3Original post

A lot of CEL activity is associated with emissions readings that go away once you start driving. I have never had a CEL in either of my Caymans , though. Sorry to hear about your trouble. I know the deflating feeling that comes along with anything that takes "the shine" off your beautiful new car. I am sure that it is an insignificant issue...but that doesn't make up for your wasted time and loss of excitement. Good luck, and keep the faith. You bought a great car. The best advice I can give you is to frequent this site. Generally speaking, you will immunize yourself against that feeling of being in the dark and at the mercy of your dealership at least.

POST 4Original post

Welcome to the Club! Sorry to hear about your problem so early on - as DaveN007 said, most of the time the CEL is related to your cats or O2 sensor, and isn't a big problem as far as driving the car. I am currently awaiting a new cat for my '06 CS which started throwing CELs a couple of weeks ago, and even though I can clear it myself (with Durametric software) it's still annoying when it keeps coming back on. My Porsche service advisor told me that they occasionally see cars throw a CEL when gas stations switch over to their winter formulation gasoline, but I don't know how true that is. By the way, make sure your gas cap is on tightly since that can cause a CEL also.

POST 5Original post

Thanks for the comments and advice. I talked to the dealer where I bought it and he suggested that the gas cap being loose may be the problem. It is a sealed system and if the cap is not 100% sealed, this light comes on. I doubt this is the problem because I haven't even had the car long enough to fill up the tank, so I haven't touched the cap yet. I'll check out your suggestions and if it doesn't go away, I'll head to the service dept.

POST 6Original post

One of the most common causes of CEL. Although in theory, the CEL could be telling you your engine is about to blow, in reality it's usually something pretty simple, i.e. bad sensor, etc.

POST 7Original post

Just got mine done last week. Engine light came on around 5K.

POST 8Original post

I had my check engine come on last year in the spring after not driving it for a month or so. The dealer told me that it was an engine "misfire". Although it was not misfiring, they stated that the tolerances were just set too tight by Porsche . They apparently did some reprogramming and had no issues. Well, took my CS out the other day after not driving again for a month and had the light come on again. I will bring it back when I get a chance...pain in the butt. It still drives fine, just an annoyance.

POST 9Original post

pick up an OBDII code reader . i got one for $50 . it will tell you what caused the CEL to come on and you can decide if you want to clear it if you want to .

POST 10Original post

If you read your owners manual you will notice that the yellow light is always emissions related and although you should take the car to the shop to have it fixed it typically wont cause any damage to the car or driveability problems. A loose gas cap is about the most common reason in any late model car. A flashing yellow light is more serious. If the red light comes on stop and call a tow truck.
