Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im looking to replace the Climate Control Unit in my 996 (2001). Looking through eBay I found one that not only works, but looks brand new. Its part number is:
996-653-101-10
I pulled the one out of my car, and its part number is:
996-653-101-03
I pulled the one out of my Boxster 986 (1997) and its part number is:
996-653-101-00
In PET, theres two other potential part numbers:
996-653-101-08
and
996-653-101-09
The problem is that all of these look the same. They all have the same connectors on the back, controls on the front, and the display is the same on all of them. The only difference I see is the color of the plastic in the back that no one will ever see because its mounted in the dash.
Can these be used interchangeably? If I bought
996-653-101-10
and replaced my current unit (
996-653-101-03
) in my 996, would it work?
It's just the screen on my Boxster, which I plan on doing that fix for. However, the 996 is the unit. It doesn't behave correctly and one of the buttons doesn't work.
Short answer: it'll be fine.
Longer answer: automotive part numbers generally change whenever the form, fit, or function changes. For Porsche, the first 9 numbers are the part number, and the remainder are variants, updates, etc. The -10 is probably more reliable and less expensive to manufacture.
Thank you!
That's exactly what I was thinking, I was hoping to find someone who could confirm those suspicions. I work for a computer company, we do the same thing with parts for our computers (so, I was pretty certain those same practices flowed into other business as well).
Glad to help!
I've poked around a bit more, and depending on settings the new unit might misbehave a bit after it's installed. If it does, it'll need to be reprogrammed with a PST2 or PIWIS.
