I've used tape wrapped putty knives and screwdrivers as substitutes but would suggest getting the real thing.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hey all - 987.1 Boxster S (2005). Took the car out of winter storage and the driver side window switch is only working about 50% of the time (up/down). One touch up/down is also not working. Windows drop automatically when you raise and lower the top and also when you open or close the door, that all seems fine. Wondering if it’s maybe just a sticky switch (dealer tried to tell me it might be the regulator or the motor). I have read a bit that it might be the motor and that you can give it a smack with a rubber mallet, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue of it going up and down, more just activating it... switch replacement seems to be a pretty simple DIY job. Anyone else who has had a similar experience, let me know.

POST 2Original post

From your symptoms, I would agree it sounds like the switch. Replacement is fairly easy if you are handy and have the right tools.

POST 3Original post

Thanks a lot!! I have found lots of videos detailing how to fix a window regulator. It seems like I still need to remove the entire door trim in order to access the switch. Do you know if that’s the case? It doesn’t look overly hard, just a lot of patience with a plastic pry-bar tool. I have some experience popping trim out, I’ve taken the radio out a few times in order to diagnose radio issues. Any suggestions on a stand-in for the plastic pry-bar tool? I just ordered some bits from Suncoast parts but I didn’t order the tool.

POST 4Original post

I've used tape wrapped putty knives and screwdrivers as substitutes but would suggest getting the real thing. I've seen trim tools at Autozone etc. They're not expensive.

POST 5Original post

The harder part is the clip/pin things that hold the door card to the metal door frame. Those suckers can be really hard to release. I have had the best luck with tools specially made for this. It's like a very large screwdriver with a fork at the end. As Greywolf said, very cheap. After that, the job is easy. If you've done radio work you can certainly handle this.

POST 6Original post

I've had issues with both the switch and the regulator. the work to replace the switch is not too bad... but you do have to prepare some extra door clips because they are so darn fragile that a few will likely break (even with trim tool). You can buy the originals or china OEM in bags of 20+ Without all the functioning clips in place, the door card will not secure properly and create a buzz/trim rattle. not the end of the world, just annoying

POST 7Original post

If you're anywhere in the US - Harbor Freight has the identical trim removal kit sold by vendors and dealers for considerably more $$$. I think it's normally around $8, but it goes on sale for half that frequently. Everyone should have 2 kits (because sometime you'll need two identical pry bars.)
