Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. Leading evidence: 'Replace by a new one and i drove away' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check done and get the fault codes' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I've just suffered an alternator failure on my 996 CAB Tip, this has now been replaced by a new one and I drove away from Porsche Silverstone this morning. Battery charging fine however...
....probably unrelated but now when I put my foot down say in 3rd at about 4000 revs it seems to stop there and will struggle to go beyond and kinda feels very rough. 2nd isn't much better but intermittently it goes ok and moves into the red as normal..
Any ideas please kind folk ?? A service issue or something more ominous?
Thanks
Roger
I assume that there was no problem with the engine performance before the Alternator Change?
When was your last Air Filter Change and Service?
It sounds as though the car is in a "limp home" mode.
If there was no problem before the Alternator Change, take the car back to Silverstone OPC. I'm guessing that if the previous alternator out put was very poor, now that you are getting a full charge again the ECU may well be very confused having got used to the lower current/voltage available with the old alternator.
Best I can come up with as thought starters,
Regards Big Bob :bye:
Thank you Bob, great ideas.
It's last service was May last year, being a minor one, it's last major one was March 07.
I'm thinking it's probably not in 'limp home' mode as it still doing 70 in 3rd???
The confusion with the ECU that's an interesting one, it will be back to Silverstone after the bank holiday.
Cheers
I'm with Bob
Reset ecu
Ignition on car not running
Pull bat earth cable
Wait a few mins.
Reconnect
Reset radio code
Reset time clock
Drive
You have nothing to loose by trying this.
If you are going back to get it checked out then try disconnecting your MAFS (the sensor on the top of the airbox / inlet tube)
The DME will possibly throw up a trouble code and the EML (Orange engine light) may appear on the dash but if disconnected it will impliment a set of standard values, these values won't be perfect but they will be much better than the faulty air mass so you should see and instant improvement.
Don't pay £350 for a Porsche one, PM me, I will be ordering mine from Bosch Germany as I have an account, work out about £130 with shipping and VAT (Bosch is genuine Porsche... Porsche buy off Bosch)
If you do need one, extract the unit by removing the two Torx screws and let me know the number written down the sensor. It will be 10 numbers starting 028******* I am thinking it may end in 007 at a guess.
Yes could be the maf but the coincidence of a alternator change out and the fault appearing just after. It points to a confused ecu
Ecu can be reset today no harm done and a check for free. I doubt that the owner will have maf in his cupboard.
So
Reset ecu
Run
No better
Pull ecu cable
Run
Still no better?
Take to garage tues
Thank you all for your suggestions.
I have just reset the ECU, you might have warned me about the alarm
, I reset the radio and went for a run.
Unfortuanately it still displayed the same symptons i.e. basically lack of any go greater than 4000 revs, it just kinda stops there and really does not want to rev any higher :x .
The bit about"ignition on car not running " should stop the alarm sounding when you reconnect the battery. Did you do this?
Sorry it did not cure the issue
I had a maf problem the car would pause and stutter at @ 4 to 4.5 k then rev on but power was down
A new maf transformed the car
