Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Has anyone used an independent to sort this type of problem out, with any sucess, (in the Berks area), spoke to JZ and they said it was not the sort of thing they did!

Suggestion
There's 2 rather large rubber discs in the corner, I'm wondering if the left one needs replacing (you can check this by carefully folding up a load of soft tissues and closing the roof mechanism (making sure that you don't use too many tissues!) and see if that fixed the noise.
Leading evidence: 'Use independent' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace (you can' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

I think that's as good as you'll get without replacing the fabric and rubber fixings tbh.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi new to the forum, my first post!
Have recently bought my first 911 (996 Targa 3.6 2003) 2 months ago, and the car is going great,
had new front tyres fitted and a minor service carried out by JZ Mactech - no problems found.
I know Targas rattle a bit, but i am getting a constant rattle from the left hand side of the slideing roof, and as per, once the roof is open the rattle is gone. Any ideas?
Has anyone used an independent to sort this type of problem out, with any sucess, (in the Berks area), spoke to JZ and they said it was not the sort of thing they did! :dont know:
a couple of observations:
1. make sure that you have all the rubber and fabric fixings in place. There's 2 rather large rubber discs in the corner, I'm wondering if the left one needs replacing (you can check this by carefully folding up a load of soft tissues and closing the roof mechanism (making sure that you don't use too many tissues!) and see if that fixed the noise. It probably will
2. spray the entire runners (on both sides) as well the front with silicon spray (you can get this from places such a Robert Dyas - general purpose silicon spray). This should at least quieten the mechanism.
Personally, I think the fabric has come off the ends of the front air spoiler and this is rattling against the roof front. (the triangle parts right in the edges, if that makes sense).
Another option is that the plastic runners have come slightly lose. Search on this forum for targa and roof and you'll see the guide as to how to remove these and re-fix. Quite an easy job apparently.
Used Silicon Lubricant spray last night, what a diffrence.
Sprayed runners, and where the roof meets with the windscreen , also rear hatch, went for a drive with heating and fan on high, once warm, turned of the fan off, opened the roof, to cool down, closed the roof after 5 min, and what a diffrence, I would say about 95% of all the rattles and squeaks have gone.
Will have another go this weekend, on areas missed and see if there is any improvemet!
