My
987.2
Boxster Base
with
PDK
new to me as of 1200 miles ago (now at 50k miles) has developed a weird fluctuation in the revs when driving steady state. Just had the temperature sensor replaced because of the red over temperature warnings and the car going into limp mode. Took it to my local (Boston)
Porsche
dealership at Herb Chambers and they did the work, which was expensive $2k but I have an extended warranty on it and they took care of dealing with the insurance so I was only out the $500 deductible. I was very happy not to have to argue the case with the insurance and they even warned the insurance that if that did not fix it they may need to replace the tranny.
Picked up the car, which was running fine, felt just a little more sluggish off the line and eager to upshift than I remembered but otherwise just fine. Drove to work and when I stopped to get into the parking lot, the revs started fluctuating up and down a few times and then resettled down. Figured it was some sort of fluke. However on the way home, under light load, steady throttle and speed, in sixth gear, around 1500 rpms, it started bouncing again 100 rpms up and down rhythmically.
Needless to say, I drove it back in this morning.
My question is: I have read a couple of mentions that this problem is a common one, including in an old post on ********, if so, has
Porsche
issued any service bulletins in the several years since the OP started this thread?
Thanks in advance
Just got off the phone with
Porsche
service, they have been trying to recalibrate it and the problem still exists so they are replacing the transmission. They will be dealing directly with the warranty company and they had warned the warranty company when they called originally that this was a possible outcome so hopefully they will all deal with it and it will still be covered under the first claim. A new
PDK
is AFAIK, $18k,
Porsche
service says that the warranty companies will try to use a used transmission so let's see what happens. Will keep you all posted.
If the dealer sold you the warranty that works in your favor, I have heard of some 3rd party companies trying to give back the purchase price of the warranty, if the
Porsche
dealer sold it to you it would be unlikely to be denied on the repair.
I bought the car from an Audi dealer right
next
door to the
Porsche
dealership belonging to the same group. The warranty was technically an Audi extended warranty though it is managed by a third party - Fidelity Warranty Services. I have a favorite dealer group here that I have been buying cars from for years and they have the best service and are close to my house so I took it there as described above, they were very helpful with the previous repair and managed the interaction with the warranty company themselves. I am keeping my finger crossed. And wow, trying to return the purchase price in order not to honor the warranty is reneging on a contract, but I can see how they would try it and just say sue us... I hope it does not come to that.
Sounds like you have a good warranty, some of the not so good companies have any out if the price is too much, it is buried in the fine print.
The $18k number for the
PDK
is puzzling to me - it sounds like dealer opportunistic profit. I had quoted a number in a
PDK
discussion, and someone pointed me to I believe
SunCoast
's website - where a new
PDK
from
Porsche
is more like $8k. And installation certainly isn't $10,000 (70 hours or so?) Here is one from a dealer in Atlanta - $9k:
Porsche Boxster transmission - 9G23000112X | Porsche Atlanta Perimeter, Atlanta GA
There are used PDK's on eBay for $2,000..
That was the number the service advisor told me off the top of his head so I guess we should take it with a grain of salt. I should know the real number tomorrow hopefully along with the response from the warranty company.
The warranty company has authorized the repair and service will be replacing the transmission. I am just so, so lucky that I got the third party warranty; the repair will be at minimum $14k. I bought the car for $24k.
I really glad is worked out for you, sounds like you picked a good company, I have heard so many horror stories on big ticket items, good luck with the repair, I have the
PDK
and track my car, I have been having it serviced often just because I am a little paranoid about issues.
