So I changed the plugs, now have random misfire plus misfire on cylinders 1,2, 5 and 6.

I started having a misfire on cylinder 1 on my 2002 996, manual. I decided to replace the spark plugs as a first step. Wet conditions caused the misfire it seemed. This car was driven all winter on heavily salted roads, and when I put it up on jack stands and pulled the rear wheels, there was salt caked all over the motor, underside, exhaust, etc. Like literally 1/4" thick in places. So I changed the plugs, now have random misfire plus misfire on cylinders 1,2, 5 and 6. I think the salt is tracking and shorting out the plugs. I dried the underside with a 1500W space heater (with fan) but this didn't help. It runs, but horribly choppy and vibrates like mad. It sounds fine unloaded (just revving) but any load on the engine causes horrible vibration from 2.5-3K RPM. What can be done?

When replacing one plug/coil, replace them all. When replacing your plugs, replace the coils. Sounds like a probable case of cracked coils. Get them all changed and you'll probably be good.

Examine the cleaned coils under a bright light with a lens = probably hairline cracks. Measure the resistance of the coils(search). Make sure you get the upgraded coils and longer bolts.Obviously new (correct part number) plugs. But this is just basic maintenance to do before you put Durametric on it. 2500 rpm is when the Variocam gets close to full advance.Check both banks have the same Actual Angle and Deviation.
