Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Iam looking at getting myself a 911 in the near future ive seen one a really like and its quiet unique. The problem is its done 110k ive read some where on here that the engines in the 996s are only good for 120k is this true? the car is a face lift car,its a tiptronic with full service history and it looks mint inside and out. Obviously i dont want to be traveling the country to look at it if is going to start going horrible wrong due to the engine being at the end of its life.
When I bought mine last year I got an invaluable inspection by Peter Morgan. Do not think this as money wasted as it is worth its weight. I suggest an inspection is your fist port of call. How much is the car and what is the spec?

I have C4 996.GT3 kit. Lapis blue oatmeal interior. SatNav (impressive) electric sunroof and seats. 57,000mls. New clutch and airbox. Full history.
Bank let me down and need to liquidate. Also have 635 motorsport, red/black, superb again. Private sale. Good luck. Dave
Just sold mine at 108,000 miles and going strong - no oil loss at all between services. Tiptronic a little safer anyway as engine cannot be over-revved and no RMS problems either.
Go down to your local taxi rank and look at all the mondeos/skodas etc with 200K+ miles on them and ask yourself the question again. I'm pretty sure that surveys have shown that the engines that are going to go pop have usually done so long before the 100K mark.
Where abouts do you live? If you live near Bolton, then I would absolutely consider the higher mileage engine and then put on the Hartech warranty scheme, which provides warranty and servicing in a monthly payment.
M96 engines cylinders typically warp over time, but if the car has been looked after and serviced correctly, there's no reason why you wouldn't get another 50k miles before it needs a lot of work.
Have a read on the Hartech website to get more of an understanding on the issues with the M96 engine (also on 997).
Try and get as later 996 as you can afford, as there's been lots of design tweaks as the engine has evolved and generally the facelift engines seem to have a slightly lower failure rate (but they are younger as well!).
As Wattie points out, it's also worth consider the Tip, as these engines cannot be over-reved, typically don't see many RMS issues.
I believe the facelift Tip has the lowest engine failure rate of the 996s. I know they sell is less numbers (I think about 40% of 996 sold are Tips), but I think that's a fair statement.
Depends on what mileage you do a year.
Mine is on the 6000 mile a year plan and costs just over £63 a month.
If you are near Bolton, get Hartech to check the car over for you first. Make it a condition of you buying the car.
Car will need a Gold service before it can go on the plan anyway.
