Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

For me, the car's sound is just as important as looks, handling and acceleration. I've listened to a lot of cars and the Maserati's exhaust just sounds awesome. (almost as good as my Boxster S with PSE ... lol) I did some research on them and sure enough they are all turbos but they still sound great. I have also listened to many sound clips of the new 911 (991.2) and I am not happy. It sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I know this was the last part of the car redesign that the Porsche engineers were trying to get right. It's not right and it needs to get fixed. Hopefully by the time they deploy the 992, this part of the package will be fixed. If Maserati can do it, why not Porsche? Maybe they need to hire some harmonic engineers to help them tune the exhaust. The Ghilbi has a 3.0 liter 6 cylinder with a twin turbo also. What am I missing. Does Porsche need to hire their engineers?

POST 2Original post

Subshooter (or anyone else): Do we know for sure that the Ghibli sound is legit (vs. phony computerized noise ala BMW)? (As yet I havent' heard one way or the other. Thanks in advance for a reply.) I read somewhere on the internet months ago that Porsche had given up on trying to make the 718 sound real and was planning to resort to a BMW-like scheme--something they had never done before in turbo cars. (I don't know what the sound was like on the relatively small number of turbo-charged 4-cylinder 924/944/968 cars from years ago.) Since I read the internet piece, however, I have not seen that claim regarding the new 718s repeated elsewhere, nor could I relocate the original source of what I read, nor did anyone else here on P-9 in the related thread have anything definitive to add. Unless they can achieve with the 718 what you're asking of them, subshooter, methinks they're in trouble, regardless of whether the 718s sound bad or sound great but only due to phony computer noise. Ah, what's the world coming to--but I'm sure that's what lots of people said when the 996 replaced the 993 and suddenly one needed antifreeze . . .

POST 3Original post

Apparently the diesel Ghibli has fake sound. Perhaps it's the V6s and the diesels with the fake noise?

POST 4Original post

I have not sat in the cabin of a Maserati yet so my experience is all real noise....not piped in via a stereo or sound port from the engine. I read several times that Porsche is not going to produce fake noise through a stereo like BMWs are doing. The sound is legit. I've listened to them driving around my neck of the woods and at road rallys. Check out this clip I made during last Spring's road rally. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j5EIuEP6JA There are several Maseratis taking off (also 991 Turbo S, GT3s, R8, Ferraris etc). The second one off the launch pad (after the GT3) sounds great. Listen the Maserati at 43 secs. It sounds awesome even at low speed....followed by a vacuum cleaner.

POST 5Original post

I haven't sat in the Ghibli yet but have had some experience with some Alfas, several Maseratis (including Quattroporte and GT). Subshooter, you're right - one thing they do well is good aural experience... They also made the best looking engine bays in the business with the right amount of chrome/red. Especially 3 litres and up but its been a while since I last opened one up. Maybe the new Alfa Giulia will help part of the Italian resurgence. edit: then again with all the nanny laws in place nowadays, maybe its for protecting the bats hearing or reducing impact to mountain goats or something like that... and they can't be caught for doing something naughty again
