Ok, got a STRANGE noise in my 996 TT .. did a hard braking in Canary Wharf since some imbecil yobo was listening to his ipod with noise cancelling hearphones and didnt look at the road... since then, I got a rattling noise. now it looks like comming INSIDE the dashboard... it looks like hailstorm in the windscreen ( yes i check the weather... ) ... I checked the whole dashboard, seems ok, doesnt seem anything on the dashboard.. checked the wipers ( to see if one was ratling against the windscreen , no go )... as long the car is moving, the noise is there. isnt really ( or I think so ) suspension related, since moving over bad road or good tarmac the noise is pretty much the same - one thing is curious though, if I speed ( lets say over 130mph ), the noise goes away. its driving me nuts ! ideas ?

Sounds like a hailstorm on the windscreen? In otherwords a crackling like noise? My guess is the carbon canistor... mine does it but not looked into curing yet. The canistor is located under the O/S/F wing behind the wheel (need to pull sh@t-shield out the way to see) See if you can pin-point it to that area.

It's the electrical harness running across the full length of the bulkhead under the dash - it's creaking. 2 cures, one is to remove the dash and felt / reclip the harness, the other is to remove the dash-top speakers and soak everything in silicon. The silicon fix will last about 6 weeks and then you will have to do it again. The dash fix will TAKE six weeks and you'll have a dozen other rattles that you didn't have before. It took me 4 weeks on and off to diagnose this problem. The noise is an absolute nightmare isn't it.
