So they skimmed the pads so they are 100% even and fitted new discs.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

hi there,
albeit got loads of work done to my car, i feel that time is now to replace the brake pads and/or disks.
the car had geo done, front and back arms and bushes replaced, front bearings replaced.. so I guess ( or I suppose ) that these are out of the question. also had 4 new tyres. and geo was last done to the car.
so my culprit goes to the front pads and or disks.
first, sorry for my ignorance, how do I check the pads visually ? the disks seem in good order, no rust or corrosion or cracks.
if I brake light or up to 20mph or so, no vibration on the wheel.
if more than 20mph and I brake medium, the longer I brake, the vibration keeps rising and rising.
if I brake hard, sometimes no vibration.
also , when I stop doing a couple of B roads and I stop the car, smells burnt brakes.
this started happening after the big trip ( 2200 miles ).
the last thing that was done to the car was engine work ( and gearbox ) , so engine was out, etc etc.. so might be something with the rear wheels ? although it really seems comming from the front ones ( hence the juddering ?)
the wheel just vibrates all over the place, although the car doesnt go left or right. but it does ( if I keep braking for few seconds ) go up and up until its almost hard to grab the wheel
hi Lloyd,
Just gave a good check to all bolts and all seems tight.
Calipers seem tight as well.
Pads ( visual inspection ) seem to have at least two layers on each , so quite lost here.
Ideas ?
Well, the discs dont look warped at all, but I guess cant figure out without taking the wheels no ? Never had a ABS warning...
Anyway, this is what the pads have left :
and the rear discs have a bit of rust on them but I dont think would be the cause - if I drive them a bit hard, the rust goes away. at the moment ( been raining non stop here and the car is outside now )
If the front disks are warped slightly this will cause judder under hard braking but you can't tell just by looking at the disks. A garage will use a guage to measure the extent of any warping. Its a ten minute job.
If the disks are warped, you may also feel the judder through the brake peddle slightly.
Dont worry about the rust, that happens all the time if the car is left standing ( especially after washing it ).
David
Well your pads look fine but it could be an issue with the inner pads (2 per disc and can only see outer in that photo) the shim is also intact on that one.
Check the INSIDE surfaces of the disks. The outer surfaces can look fine, but I've seen dozens of disks that look like yours on the outside, and are completely shot on the inside.
Edit: Which disks are those photos of? Front/Rear/Left/Right?
Well , booked for Porsche Portugal to check the discs.. I talked to them about whats happening and they said instantly that one or both of the front discs must have warped.
I got my pleasent surprise of the prices : 150 pounds per disc, 140 pounds per pad ( so in a nutshell 300 pounds per pair, 280 per pair of pads ) but the best bit... 45 pounds PER HOUR !
They quoted me around 2 hours to replace discs and pads. So around 750 pounds to change discs +pads +labour at an OPC. Nice
Gotta love Portugal
Richard, the rusty ( second picture ) is the rear disc ( right side ) and the pad picture is the front disc ( again right side )
Thanks all
UPDATE
So car went in, they said the discs were indeed warped but the the pads were new.
So they skimmed the pads so they are 100% even and fitted new discs.
Front only.
Car is as suppose to be : braking is back to fantastic.
:floor: :floor: rhenders, rhenders...
No, they installed new discs and skimmed the pads so they are uniform since the pads were basically as new but they got a bit uneven in the wear because the discs were warped.
So they skimmed the pads and re used them and fitted new discs.
Oh and all for 350 quid. In an OPC
