Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 60k 996 C2 Cab has a bit of a whine from the engine. Whilst being serviced at the OPC they said it would need investigation and said it might be a pulley or something. Opening the engine cover and the noise is not really a whine, sounds different than from within the car. The noisiest part of the engine you can obviously hear is the alternator, not sure if it is the same sound though. Any body have any ideas of comments on what it could be? Thanks Ritchie

POST 2Original post

The engine does whine so it could be normal but to be put under the ears of a techy wouldn't go a miss.

POST 3Original post

Sounds like it might be a tensioner or idler roller on the polyrib drive belt. If you take the belt off you can usually feel a slight "grittiness" in the bearings.

POST 4Original post

as richard states the tensioner or the idler pulley's get noisy and cause the noise.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Noise Thanks for the tips guys, I will check the idlers and let you know. Ritchie
