Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My car has 5 original coils and one of the new type (genuine) which was fitted by the PO's Indy about 3-4 years ago when he got a urgent message on the dash about it.

When I first got my 996 I noticed mine were mostly cracked and a lot worse that what yours are showing, I wasn't having an issue with them but I decided to fill any cracks with silicone and they lasted years after that.
Leading evidence: 'Install by the po's indy about 3-4 years ago' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'spark plug and not a coil pack' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill any cracks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coil packs are a service item as far as I see it and as i come from the school of preventative maintenence when I had a split in one coil giving a misfire in the wet, I changed all 6.Was a no brainer.

I believe the Beru brand coil-packs are OEM equivalent and it's what I've used on my 997.

Suspected cause
I think I only changed them all because I was chasing a misfire which turned out to be a spark plug and not a coil pack.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

I wouldn't change yours until you started having issues, they look like they have a good bit of life left in them yet, they are not that hard to change with the exhaust fitted.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, could I canvass opinion on these coil pack cracks/marks please? What kind of severity should they be before changing?
I should add that I've got the silencers off at the moment and changing them now would be much easier!
Also if the consensus is to change then what brand of coil packs are favoured?
Thanks
Yeah that second one is definitely bad enough that you'd get some funky stuff going on in the rain I'd say.
As you mention it's easier now so for the sake of a couple of hundred quid or so I'd get a new set in there.
If you are diying then I'd change them all whilst you have access.
I believe the Beru brand coil-packs are OEM equivalent and it's what I've used on my 997.
The new design is however bigger so I believe there is 1 coil-pack that causes an issue on fitment to a 996. I think the new part no is BERU 0040100178

I just all got 6 changed as I'd had a couple of misfires over a 3 month period or so after the car had been sat in the rain for a while. Apparently the old ones didn't look to bad but the specialist said they can look fine and still malfunction. It's the first port of call for any misfire (had my sparks done this year already with a major service). Not sure I would bother without a misfire though.. hopefully this will sort it and no further delving is needed.
Interested to note that the new Beru coils are actually a bit longer and come with longer bolts. I had to put spacers on the heat shields to get them on, is this what people do or do they just leave them off?
They are the new .. improved .. modified coils that Porsche released after a know issue for many years and they waited until no car was still in warranty with these before bringing out a new design ..
They then said all 6 HAVE to be replaced at the same time .. My comment to that began with a B and ended with an S ... had an LOCK in the middle .
A design issue shall we say that Porsche ignored .
Yup .. certain models and the heat shield no longer fits ..
:worship: Porsche .
Spacers is correct .. its all you can do ..
Forgive the sarcasm aimed at Porsxche ...
Some things frustrate me .. and this is one of them ... yup i know i spelt Porsche wrong .. they deserve it .
My car has 5 original coils and one of the new type (genuine) which was fitted by the PO's Indy about 3-4 years ago when he got a urgent message on the dash about it. The car has run perfectly all that time, so dM's cynicism is well founded. I don't think there are ANY car companies these days who really do the right thing by their customers. But yes, VAG brands seem to be the worst, Porsche prominently among them... IMS anyone?
My car is running fine on the mismatched coils but a couple of my originals look a bit dodgy. I have just bought 6 of the new style BERU coils to fit as preventative maintenance when I am next under it. Possibly unnecessary but not terribly expensive when bought OEM, and I like the idea of one less known fault to go wrong. I will put the one newish genuine one in the frunk as a spare just in case.

Mine didn't look as bad as that and I changed them for the Beru type when I bought the car, as well as 2 new heat shields which protect them from the exhaust heat I presume.
