Eventually all you can do is make changes strictly for the sake of change not for the sake of improvement.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Those are some seriously sexy curves. I love it!! The rear lights are a step closer to Aston Martin lights (very sleek and sexy) and I also love the off centred front
LED lights
.
Not too sure about the exposed radiators though, I foresee a lot of trips to the dealer for repair.
I love it!!! typical porsche, make incremental changes to make the car look "new" and fresh but "old" at the same time so as not to upset loyalists and current owners. I think it looks fantastic. This will be my next car in 5 yrs (I'll buy CPO). I've already starting to lay the groundwork for my very soon (3 days
) to be wife that a 911 is the perfect family car (when coupled with a second car like a small CUV - Q5 etc)..."I mean sweetie, it has 4 seats and the kids fit comfortably in the back..."
I really like the subtle changes. A red on black 991 with the Aero package would be amazing!!!
I can't wait to see what they do with the new Cayman! I might have to upgrade in a few years
....is this why you're selling your Cayman!? Did you get an early model 991 on pre-order?
I like all the changes, EXCEPT those off centered DRL's. Too many of the lines on it don't line up.
Its not as bad as the 996 headlight debacle, but it looks like they messed up on lining things up!
IF I were a Porsche engineer/designer... the DRL strip would look more like the picture below.... see DRL on the left.... (that I photoshopped).
The rear end is f*ed up. The bumper reflectors are out of place and the lettering is way to busy all jammed into that space, leave the PORSCHE lettering out@#$! Yes I know you can order deleted but why put it there in the first place. Tailights looks nice though, remind me of the 918.
The photos say Rennteam...?!
Oh well, I guess I just don't get it. Looks like the old car w/ tailights that are narrower and the
headlights
look almost the same as the 997. You'd think for all the internet speculation about the
headlights
the result would be something a little more distinctive. It looks longer and has the interior of a Panamera, or really, the future 928. The lettering on the back is overdone but at least it can always be deleted. The spoiler may be better looking but the sunroof sure isn't. In another year nobody will notice the DRLs or anything else, it will be
the
911 and that's fine, but to me at least the non GT3 991 has fully crossed into the GT category.
Surprised that no one has commented on the ugly red reflectors on the rear bumper, is that a new European safety thing or something? Remember those spy pics of the Cayman where there were some just stuck on and we assumed they'd go away come production time, well maybe not so...
I was expecting an improvement over the 997. This is quite the opposite. Massively disappointing.
I particularly don't like the DRLs, the extended wheelbase, the 20" wheels, the short story on the rear, and the interior.
Lots of misaligned lines on those lights, too much space between door and rear wheel, needlessly large wheels for a car this size, too much information in too little a space on the rear, and too many lines and creases going this way and that way on the inside.
This has me worried about the 981.
Wondering about the bumper reflectors as well, maybe it is a required vehicle standard somewhere.
+1, having the PORSCHE on the rear bumper is way too much, same for the 911 part of Carrera S.
Wondering if they are going for a
particular
crowd with that PORSCHE lettering and redundant 911 part (chinese market perhaps???)
Oh dear. I missed those the first time around. Bimmers have had them for some time also, for no apparent reason. It has to be for legislation. I can't imagine anyone thinks they look good, and I doubt if they are of any actual use.
Add this to the list of 991 design features I don't like.
I don't have a problem with the DRLs,....in fact the new front end looks pretty slick IMO. The rear reflectors don't bother me either if they are for real in the US market.
However I don't like the 911 along with the
Carrera
wording either. Haven't decided about the Porsche wording yet,...have to see it in person. Hopefully you can delete (or of course remove) whatever you don't like and keep whatever you do.
I can't wait to see a 991 lined up next to an older 911 to get an idea of how much bigger or longer it looks.
The interior is different for sure, car looks odd with no hand brake, and the wart just got worse instead of better, with some weird little artsy indentation in the dash.
Ken, if I were you I'd have started a poll with this thread asking if the members Like, Dislike, Confused or Neutral about the looks of the new 991. As for me, I have a crazy idea about the new concept of the coming 991 that I would like to put on the table.
IMHO the new
Carrera
with its new interior, wheels size and longer wheel base is moving further from a track car to a street car.
Now why would Porsche do so?
Well, maybe it's proven to them that Porsche sports cars owners fall in two categories Track Oriented and Badge Admirers.
1) The Track Oriented are people who want light weight cars that go fast with superior handling. To this category they'll offer the new 991 GT3 and 991 GT2 along with the RS variants for hardcore minded. And I assume this category of people will not favor the looks of the 991
Carrera
.
2) The Badge Admirers are people who seek a comfortable, luxurious sports car that goes fast with matching handling for occasional track events but they mainly enjoy driving their cars as DD. And I assume this category of people will favor the changes provided in the new 991
Carrera
.
This will make the
Carrera
(the base model, S, Targa and tt) compete with the Austin Martin, Maserati, California, SLS and the likes that are more comfy luxury cars than track cars.
And of course what would prove my point or not, is whether the GT2, GT3 and their RS models would get the same heavy interior and big wheels or not. These models will meet their rivals from Ferrari, Lamborghini, GT-R, ZR-1 and the likes.
I can't speculate about the 981 but I won't be surprised if the 981 doesn't get the luxurious heavy interior giving it a push up next to the
Carrera
for a start in terms of performance and hp/weight ratio.
Great write-up as always, Ken. Did you get to drive a yellow one? When you're already driving Porsche's sexiest line it's hard to get excited about this new design. Perhaps it will grow on me but it's nothing like the love at first sight experience with my CS...
This is what happens with "evolution". Eventually all you can do is make changes strictly for the sake of change not for the sake of improvement.
There are only so many ways to shape the lights. You can't tell if the front of the car is smiling or frowning. I am hoping that this is all a big hoax as this car seems to have been designed by an amateur!
I think the 991 is going upmarket and becoming more and more of a GT car instead of a track car. The GT2/3 would probably still be around for track performance but they will cost considerably more.
Notice the interior shot...I guess the
pdk
still comes with buttons on the wheel! They are still going to charge a premium for having proper shifters!
I like the exterior but I'm afraid that the car may appear and feel big. The steering wheel and instrument panel look nice, but the rest of the interior looks too big and plush for a sports car. I don't like the seats.
Yikes, didn't even pay attention to this spot. A great place for collecting dust and other random dashboard particles...
Also, what kind of parking brake does it employ? A pedal type or ?!
