My understanding from reading other posts is that its not possible to replace/refit this without taking the whole frame out.

Its a change from driving darker coloured cars for me and it does show the Targa roof off nicely
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
New owner of a 2002 Targa and in search of knowledge.
The left hand rear curtain that covers the running track is slightly damaged and is not secured correctly at the bottom. My understanding from reading other posts is that its not possible to replace/refit this without taking the whole frame out. I am inclined to leave it alone if that is the case. Can anyone confirm?
Secondly whilst inspecting the curtain I found two L shaped plastic tubes floating around loose in the running track for the retractable roof. Its also quite dirty/greasy in there. Can anyone shed any light what these are for and how I might re-fit them?
Pics attached for reference.
Thanks in advance.
:welcome: to 911uk
We've got a couple of Targa experts on here so you should get a reply soon.
In the meantime, as you seem to have mastered the dark art of posting pics on here, how's about posting a couple of your car.
Hi T8,
Thanks for the welcome :bye:
Here's a couple of pics taken earlier this week to wet your appetite. I'll have to wait for a break in the weather here to get some more
Lovely looking Targa, really suits it in that colour :thumb:
The curtain should push back into the lower rail it came from, you may need a flat blade screwdriver to do this?
As for the two L pipes they look like drain tubes but I don't recognise where these ones are from? I'm guessing deMort will know though.
I'll start with the items ..
They are battery vent pipe connections and not part of the roof .. i can only guess that someone had a split front glass drain tube and perhaps tried using these to drain away the water into the channels ..
A total guess i'm afraid as i have no real idea of what they would be doing in the roof system .
The fabric blind has had it im afraid .. once these come out of the runner as yours has done it damages the blind .. you can refit it but it will always jump out at the damaged point .
I've had it happen with a brand new one , as soon as it jumps it's a new blind required .... £100 down the pan thank you very much !
Can it be changed in situ ..
Officially no ..
It is just about possible and the images below might help ..
I would struggle .. i reckon i could do it .. maybe .. but i know every part to remove and indeed the challenge this would be ..
If you really want to diy it then i will spend some time putting together some instructions on how i would go about it ..
For me this is weekend stuff as i don't get much time during the week .. just let me know though .
Roof post about these , the issues and noise fixes ..

Thanks DeMort.
Its a relief to know the two plastic parts are not anything more sinister. The drainage holes are clear and everything is dry so I'll chalk it up as a win. By coincidence the battery has been replaced recently but still can't fathom how they could end up where they did.
Figured the blind/curtain had probably had it. I guess its good news that it can potentially be done without roof removal although trying to slot it through that channel insitu looks like expert level krypton factor  If its not going to do any further damage I think I will leave it as it is for now.
If you can point me in the right direction for removing that panel it would be appreciated. After finding those pipe connections in there I would be happier giving a more through inspection and knowing there are no other nasties lurking.
Basically ... you cant remove it and please dont even try .
It supports the front glass drain tube that side .. remove it and you WILL have water leaks .
I assume it goes back and forth ok as it is .. if it starts to get jammed up .. bunching up is perhaps a better description then you need to stop using the roof and get it fixed ..
I suspect it will carry on as is though .
I'm afraid it is a DIY level of 10/10 .. there are many mechanics that wouldn't even try .. i've changed a few but always with the roof out .. just getting the wiring up the fabric sleeve in this part is a challenge let alone in situ .
BUT as said .. i have some ideas on how it could be done ..
I'm guessing you're Scotland by the picture .. but just going to ask anyways .. your nowhere down south are you ? im Brighton is all .
Image below shows the drain tube and the blind that supports it .. other side but exactly the same .
Thanks deMort.
Guess I will leave it as is and just keep an eye on it for now.
Nice guess. I am actually in Ireland at the moment. I live in Beaconsfield, Bucks so Brighton is an easy enough run.
Ok so not a million miles away ..
For now then see how it goes .. at home i don't do private work and to be honest this isn't a job i would even contemplate at home .. i give free advice basically for those that do visit ... if you were going to diy then i would certainly suggest a visit first .
I work a wee bit closer to you though than Brighton .. if an attempt was going to be made to replace in situ then i would rather it was me that attempted it ..
I'm Nothing to do with my garage , just a mechanic there .. they will obviously charge .. it's just i would be happier if i attempted it rather than an unknown garage that may or may not have knowledge of these systems .
I've a good friend who is a forum member & he has a similar age Targa that DeMort has fixed through his work. We have a really good techie who normally looks after our cars though he politely declined to fix the Targa roof on my friend's car given how complex they are - if we'd insisted he would of though Precision/DeMort has such a good rep that we did a nearly 6 hr round trip to drop his car off & the it now works better than ever.
Thanks. I'll keep an eye on it for now. When I'm back in the UK and ready to get it repaired or maybe have the roof overhauled I will drop you a line deMort
for garage details to get booked in.
A roof overhaul is not really warranted unless its the original cables or you have an issue ... always a nice thing to do but rather expensive with a basic cable and tube replacement coming in at circa £2400 these days .
Original cable tubes are gold .. the modified ones are silver .
If you are going this route then i can recommend Northway near Reading .. from what i've been told by customers they are perfectly capable and a bit cheaper than where i work ..
You have options shall we say .
Any other garage and you need to confirm how many they have done before agreeing to using them .. i've had to fix previous garage attempts at fixing these hence i recommend my own garage or Northway .
