Hi guys,
question for you, how do you do tire changes, do you use any chain shops, is there anything worth recommending? Anything worth avoiding?
Discount tire wants $775 for 2 rear
PS4S
tires
with service included. Was wondering if this is a good idea.
Best,
Price isn't terrible. I wouldn't have a problem using them. However, I would ask and make sure that they can mount the
tires
without marking the wheels. There's a "touchless" tire machine that works well. Also if possible, Road Force Balancing is best but spin balancing isn't the end of the world either. Good luck.
Make sure they don't stack the wheels, a practice they
all
use. When I bought a set I asked them not to, but they tried to anyway. I can assure you that a wheel stack with Porsche wheels will likely result in a scratch, one they won't want to be responsible for and one that will be a tough repair. Next time around for me? I'll bring the wheels in my truck, they will get them one at a time and I'll store them. Don't forget to change the TPMS while they are in there.
Stacking wheels? You've got to be kidding me! I worked in tires for over 20 years, never saw a stacked set of wheels in any of the shops I worked in over that time. And I've never seen stacked wheels at the shop I've been patronizing for the past 7-8 years. I can not imagine why anyone would want to stack alloy wheels. If I ever saw that I'd be looking for a new shop. Incredible lack of concern about the customers' property.
The place that tried was heralded all around my town. I didn't want to be a "Richard" but when they were ready to do it I decided to share with them the cost of a wheel and the extra charge for factory paint. As you know from being in the biz, turnover is guaranteed in these places too. Best part? They sell aftermarket wheels.
I used my local Discount Tire for new
tires
on my
Cayman
last summer. They didn't scratch my wheels and even agreed to clean up all the mess left on the inside of the wheels from prior balancing. Even using their Road Force system it took them two tries to get everything right, but they did not hesitate to redo the work and actually seemed to take pride in getting it right. Assuming your local shop is managed similarly, and you communicate your expectations very clearly and carefully, you can have a good experience with them.
well from my personal history of
tires
, balancing and care , I only use discount tire. In my area they are the only ones that
-road force balance my
tires
-have competitive prices and will match any you find cheaper
-always use a
torque wrench
and finish tightening by hand
-always courteous
-lifetime rotation, balancing, no questions asked
my experience at my local shop , cant vouch for others. My location has 5 stars, hundreds of reviews
I used Discount Tire when buying new
tires
for my CS with 19" OEM wheels about a year ago. Competitive price and great service. Went back recently to replace my wife's SUV
tires
and ordered
tires
for my track wheels set. No regrets. Shop and equipment looked relatively new, so that is something to be aware of.
I've had great service at Discount Tire, and now their tire pricing is the same as
Tire Rack
.
Their mounting and balancing equipment is first rate, and the one I go to has a large viewing window from the customer waiting area so I was able to observe the entire installation.
Discount Tire is a corporate customer of ours and they shared with us some of their culture and processes as an employer. It's no accident that you are more likely to be satisfied with their product and services. And it's not uncommon to meet staff that have been with them for many years. Not something you might expect considering the job itself. It's hard work and unglamorous.
Good company.
I have been using them since 1985 and use them for everything...except my super nice cherry cars. Done with discount. Over 35 years and probably 30 cars they have damaged too many of my wheels to risk it with them anymore. It all depends who you get and sometimes you can ask them to be careful. I have done recently but feels terrible. I sold a
BMW
1M Coupe with mint wheels and the had agreed to put new
tires
on it for sale. Ran out of time and they were the only ones that had them. I explained it to the manager and he personally helped and they didn't damage them but that was after they have damaged so many. I take my honda CRV there, my old
BMW
e46s, wife's GTI but not taking my new
Cayman
there. The worse for me was that I went back to them after they had ruined so many wheels but love their road hazard warranty. I took in 4 boxes of brand new BBS wheels that I waited months for. I spoke to the manager and offered $40 Tip ahead of time to the installer to be extra careful. I gave him $40 up front and I watch from behind the glass as he balances the last one and lets it bounce like a ball as he removed it from the balancing machine and lets it fall face first into the concrete floor. I walk out there right away...why are you doing that? He says, don't worry the
tires
have a rim protectors to protect the face! and looks at me like I'm some looney. Look! He lifts up the brand new BBS and tire to show me a dime size chunk of paint now missing from of my brand new BBS wheel. The I look down to see a nice piece of BBS paint on the concrete on top of an old valve stem that someone had dropped. the metal part chewed into my new wheel. I got my
tires
, manager comes out and says sorry, here is business card, take it to this place and they will repaint your wheel and bill us. It will be like new... this happens often and the repairs are great!
So like I said, I have gotten great service and workmanship before but that is NOT their thing... They are not AWESOME TIRE, or ULTIMATE CARE TIRE or GENTLE-MOUNTING TIRE COMPANY, they DISCOUNT TIRE COMPANY first!
I found that my
BMW
dealership charged $25 per tire to mount and balance
tires
with much more care than discount ever did. So I just order
tires
from
Tire Rack
, have them shipped to the dealer or buy them from them and they mount them for me. I'm sure
Porsche
is double that but if you want to keep the wheels looking very nice, it's worth it. If your wheels are curbed already, then by no means waste money and go to Discount. most likely you will be ok but I'm done with special wheels.
Best of luck.
"they ruined so many wheels".......
But you still use them. 🤔
Ruin 1 of my wheels and even if you make good, you will only get a second chance. (everyone deserves a second chance) But "ruin" another?
"I don't use them on my special cars" anymore. but still use them for "transportation" vehicles.
Snakebitten, It's not that simple. Mr. "not careful" guy can take a job elsewhere and now that shop has the wheel bouncer. My dad had all of us with our belt buckles at the nine o'clock or three o'clock position and that was for pumping gas and leaning in to wash windshields, no big buckles either. He was also meticulous about entry and exit from customer cars and how clean we were. When I sought replacement of my
Porsche
vent, a tech with a significant amount of grease was going to sit in my leather sport buckets. That's really why I did the job myself. I told him I wanted to learn how it went in and out which was only partially true. Can you imagine grease on
alcantara
? That's a problem, this was a
Porsche
dealer too. PS Where were the Inigo Montoyas of the Fiat world when I was a lad? We worked extra hard for doughnuts, nobody ever slipped me a tip. Doughnuts or muffins for coffee break is still a great call and most often very appreciated by staff, a very cost effective way to seek extra care.
I was simply pointing out that many, and in fact all responses were positive, and including mine, until the Discount Tire rant.
There's no doubt that every Discount Tire nationwide experience is NOT going to be good. Statistically impossible. I don't even know why I felt defensive on their behalf though. Lol
But I don't think I will stop doing business with them unless they suddenly let me down after better than 25 years of doing just the opposite.
Mine wasn't even discount tire, it was a more expensive shop than that, like I said the one in my city everyone raves about. It's somewhat of a dice toss where you try to minimize the chances of damage as best you can and the rest is fate. I do like my idea of taking the wheels loose and distributing them one at a time, bringing enough doughnuts for the crew and offering a decent tip if all the wheels come back blemish free. Most of the tire shops I see now have the proper gear to do the job correctly when used by a competent technician. Now the Atlas unit I learned on? You had to soap the bead correctly or bead ripping was a distinct possibility, nevermind the rim!
You can see the "at that time" state of the art machine behind 15 year old Boris the hairbag as he waxes a brand new 124 Spider.
Sad that we have to bribe people with doughnuts and tips just so that they will do the job their paid for.
Perhaps but it's cheap insurance, trust me it works like a charm at your doctor visit too, like magic.
To lots of tire changing folks a fancy BBS wheels might as well be a tire off a snow blower. They don’t give two chits. I found a great place and there actually enthusiasts and get it.. they know if something happens they paying… and check this out, it happened! The installer came out and said I just put a scratch on the lip (bbs LM’s)… they bought another one and I got to keep the scratched one. 850.00 for a 17x10… 🤦♂️
I agree with everything you said, especially doing your job the best you can for the pay you negotiated. Before my corporate gig, I was in trauma situations and running a C arm in surgeries. The wealth of the patient laying there was unknown to me and moot anyway. If you needed me I was on it, car crash, high rise jumpers who lived, fights, drug overdoses, all of it.
I needed assistance at a staples the other day with a Xerox print function, the girl says "it's not really my job to instruct you". I remained silent but I had heard her speaking about Christmas weight gain as I approached the counter. She worked in the print shop portion of the store. Hey sorry to take you away from your Jenny Craig conversation. At my dads I was paid minimum wage, you need your
tires
checked and air top off? Bring it over here I got you, no charge. Now you're lucky to find a free air hose.
We have a newly opened Discount Tire here and I have been very impressed - free flat fixes, never had to leave it and they actually have the
981S
tire size for
Michelin
Sport S's. I got my last set from Costco which I would like to avoid because ours is so busy and do not trust then as much. But a lot of times, you pull in the
Porsche
and no one really wants to be the guy that scratches anything on it. (still a worry though) But if your local Discount Tire has a good rep, I would not hesitate giving them a try. Ours could not be more accommodating, and they have fixed flats on 2 of our cars, no charge, and while I waited, and I could watch them do it through the big plate glass window. The guy came out and showed me the culprit and talked about the job etc.
My dealer replaced 4 on my
Cayman S
for $1375 ~ Fl.
Does Discount Tire now own
Tire Rack
?
Yes:
Discount Tire Is Acquiring Tire Rack. Here’s Why That Matters
Discount Tire is good to go... I pulled my own rims/
tires
and brought them in for mounting new
PS4S
's which i bought from them for a in the park price...
I did rears at Discount Tire for $862 (2X 265/35/19). They had the
tires
in shop and I was in and out in 25 min. Super professional and finally I have a new rubber to **** that road. Lol I couldn’t resist writing it. My apologies gents… it’s a funny thing with the
tires
because you spend a heck of a dollar for something that is not even noticeable from the outside.
Cheers!
Man that too bad… the difference in the websites is night and day… DT always seem to carry more discontinued stuff… junky rims with awful fitment
Excuse me what? 😂
I used discount tire for the first time a month ago. Replaced all 4
tires
.
Service was fast, balanced well, but they didn’t use any seat or floor protection. It was a rainy day, and they muddied up my carpet and got oil/grime on my seats.
I was a bit pissed.
That's real annoying but can happen anywhere. Had it happen to me most recently at an
Acura
dealership when my car was in for routine maintenance. Didn't notice right away, drove home and my hands were filthy when I got there from the dirty steering wheel and anything else the mechanic touched. They were very apologetic. Fortunately it hasn't happened more than once but now I check before leaving any service provider.
