I checked the passenger side and it is not a blinker.
Leading evidence: 'Check passenger side and it is not a blinker' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check left front side light' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It sounds like the side marker bulb has been replaced with one that doesn't provide the resistance expected for factory bulbs.

A gen 1 may be different so you should check your manual.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It sounds like the side marker bulb has been replaced with one that doesn't provide the resistance expected for factory bulbs. The gen 2 expects a WY5W bulb. A gen 1 may be different so you should check your manual. Yours may be either white or amber but it needs to have a similar wattage or it will throw that canbus error.
Interesting. I'll have to look at the yellow ones that came with my car - I thought mine are
LED
.. but entirely possible I'm mistaken. Maybe the clears were aftermarket? (Former owner installed them..)
For some reason I've seen mention of this same error on multiple .2 cars - same side. Wonder if there is a ground issue there somewhere..??
The bulbs in my 2007 Boxster S are the original bilbs. They never failed previously. The light just came on. I swapped the bulbs and no change. Would anyone know where the ground might be? I bought bulbs at Auto Zone and no change. It wouldn't be a fuse would it? Usually they are good or bad. I thought perhaps mice might have chewed the wires but the lights work. Is there anyone out there that has fixed this issue?
From memory I seen to recall a discussion many years ago regarding changing
987.1
side markers to dual purpose (both turn signal and running light) that claimed the
987.1
bulbs were dual filament. Note that
987.2
are single filament.
So if they are dual filament it might be possible that one is not working. Could be a burnt filament or a corroded connection. What bulb type is yours? Is there 2 or 3 wires going to the marker fixture?
I checked the passenger side and it is not a blinker. There are 2 wires to the single filament bulb. I spoke with Pedros Garage in Florida who is a
Boxster
expert and he said most likely it's a ground or mice have chewed the wire insulation. He went on to say the wire does not have to be chewed through to send a signal with a change in resistance. I'm chasing a ghost. I can't figure out where the ground is mounted. I hate to bring to
Porsche
after speaking to them they said it could take excessive diagnostics. Sounds costly. Any idea where the ground might be?
I believe there are two chassis ground points in the frunk. One one each side. You need to remove some plastic to expose them. Somewhere online there's a good wiring diagram pdf for
987.1
so you can trace the circuit. It mentions where (roughly) the ground is located. I'm on my phone so I don't have access to it ATM.
I found the diagram and it says the left side marker ground is inside the right front fender. Hopefully it's behind the carpet liner. It is a brown wire which I hope to find. I'll report back with my findings. Fingers crossed. Talk soon.
Just wondering if one could simply tap the ground wire from the socket and re-ground it to a nearby metallic grounding point. All grounds are common and all metallic parts lead back to the battery negative. Maybe just providing a new grounding point might solve the problem. Could be checked quickly by touching a short length of wire between the socket ground and an earthing point on the body/chassis and see if the issue goes away.
I had this warning light a few months ago after my battery had died and I recharged it. Left side marker light out warning, yet the light was working fine. The error fixed itself after a while an I haven't had it since.
Just a comment - I'm looking at the capabilities of the
Foxwell NT710
- and had it hooked up to the
Boxster
. Guess what error it reports? That the left running light was out. The light isn't out, and no warning shows on the dash. I can reset the error, but it comes back. I believe I mentioned remembering something about it - and that's what it was.. my car has a warning about a light that works perfectly.
The
987.2
can be programmed (not with the NT710, but with the
NT530
) to have the running lights work as turn signal repeaters. When the lights are on - they blink by turning it off to blink. When the lights are on - it powers it up to blink. Works fine.
I had the same on my
987.1
Boxster
with aftermarket
LED
sidemarkers fitted by the PO. I added aftermarket plug-in resisters that trick the canbus into seeing the correct current draw an the error stayed away. For my
987.1
Cayman
I bought sequential
LED
sidemarkers that were "canbus compliant" (ie. built in resistance) and dno't create errors.
