I think its been to easy for Porsche to tell customers that they have RMS leaks when the real cause of the problem was perhaps the IMS.

Leading evidence: 'perhaps the ims' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'perhaps the ims' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The Germans are fantastic Engineers. I mean there are at the top. Without there knowledge the Americans would never have beat the Russians to the moon. And yet here we have a car that is still an in house car, And as passionate as the Germans are for there cars. Theres no Germans offering a Retrofit IMS Bearing ?. Am I wearing Blinkers or are we only having two options here? LN Engineering or Insaro. Cant believe we have to rely on the Americans & the Spanish to get us out of a hole. Neither of which are good car builders. http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html http://www.insaroims.com/ I don't think I can be wearing blinkers as if there were other options Autofarm or Hartech would be using them. I'm just amazed that the German aficionado's are not fabricating something?. Does it not seem odd. Go to any car show, There will always be some German offering really well made retro bits and boobs. And there online stores for after market parts are always very extensive.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry for the typo (sex mad)

POST 4Original post

If the Germans produced a retrofit bearing that would be tantamount to admitting they got it wrong in the first place (or have they done that?). Maybe not in the national psyche...........?[ ]

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I dont see that German Porsche independents would not cash in on an open market. just to be patriotic?. They used to have a big wall there so I'm told.

POST 6Original post

the thing that puzzels me is that my car 3.6 2001 has done close to 128.000 miles and the history says its never had an major engine fault and yet some very well looked after machines are expiring with less than half this milage so is it just luck or type of use or servicing Are we all sitting on a time bomb or are the number of engines that fail very few compared to whats out there . One things for shore it dosnt inspire me to upgrade to a 997

POST 7Original post

Tongue in cheek.........[ ] Maybe there aren't enough failures to make it worthwhile? Does anyone know the rate? Say per 1000 cars?

POST 8Original post

They made just over 146,000 996's with the "M96" engine. If the urban myth figure of 5% is anywhere near correct, we are talking about 7,000+ engines. Plus, probably twice that many 986's. 20,000+? (Not sure I believe that though).

POST 9Original post

hi just to give me some sleep at night or not can any one beet 128000 on one engine and it still pulls like a train and uses very little oil and still gives a s--t load of pleasure or am i the leading candidate for a massive bill please let me know thanks peter

POST 10Original post

- usually when I say things like that I am! Six months ago I said pah 40k mile clutch change, mine is still going fine and feels strong on the original at 47k miles. 48k miles I first felt clutch slip and three hours (Porsche) driving later the clutch was slipping whenever it hit boost in a high gear. Doh. - but it feels much nicer now its done [ ]

POST 11Original post

You are certainly not alone. There is a thread on RennTech with lots of people way over that. A couple of 200,000+ milers IIRC.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think there are plenty of failures to be honest. I think its been to easy for Porsche to tell customers that they have RMS leaks when the real cause of the problem was perhaps the IMS. The customer would not know unless they dropped the gear box. I also think someone in Germany must be making a retrofit bearing I cant except that they would be buying them from LN or Insario. I'm not disputing the quality at all they look fantastic and the LN is ceramic coated. Its just defies logic the car is German the Germans are great Engineers they would make something themselves I just think there not selling it overseas. I was just curious if anyone knew of anyone other than LN or Insario.

POST 13Original post

I thought the symptoms are quite different, i.e the RMS seal leak gives you a puddle of oil and when the IMS bearing lets go lots of bits in the engine hit each other! Or does the IMS leak oil before it lets go?

POST 14Original post

The intermediate shaft support seal can, and frequently does, leak. But there is absolutely no evidence that this is an indication of an impending intermediate shaft bearing failure.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I figure Porsche must have got twitchy about it because they started re issuing engines to persistent leaker's. I seem to remember Blue paint on the block means rebuild (I think)?. When mine was new they had it for ages, it had three RMS in a month. one lasted 10 days.

So in answer to my original post, "Know one knows of any other Manufacturers then" ???.
