I’m not going to say it was the sound particularly as the car was quite fruity sounding but it was the throttle pedal feel, it had lost that magical linear instant connection to the engine and felt much more like my Golf R had….this massively disappointed me.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I started seriously looking at getting a Cayman about 10 years ago - things were simpler then and I would have been perfectly happy with a 981S or 981GTS. Fast forward 10 years and one pandemic, and I'm finaly about ready to pull the trigger. But now things have got a bit more complex - do I go for an old 981GTS, a middle aged 718 GTS 2.5, or a newer GTS 4.0? My budget is about £65k but that is stretching the finances a bit. My head says 2.5 GTS for drivability and reasonable modernity. My heart says GTS 4.0 because well, six cylinders, but I fear I won't really get to use the performance on my rural Herefordshire/Wales B-roads. My wallet says just be happy with an old 981S (but like me, they are getting on a bit, and I want to keep the car until my retirement in 5 years time). My experience on driving a Cayman is limited to a couple of hours at the PEC at Silverstone in a base 718 PDK. It was fun, but it didn't my world alight. I know this is a bit of a long shot, but could anyone with more experience of driving Caymans, give some insight or pros and cons with these different models. Apart from the driving experience, I would also not like to lose my shirt buying the wrong car, or being stuck with a money pit. It won't be a daily driver, and will probably leave it in the garage over winter, so won't be sticking loads of miles on it (if that makes a difference).

POST 2Original post

I have a 981 GTS, & absolutely love it. I’ve driven the 4 cyl newer Cayman & albeit a very capable car, I couldn’t warm to the engine sound. I haven’t driven the 4.0, The 981 GTS is an acknowledged ‘sweet spot’ in the range as per the many very postive reviews from the motoring press when it was launched & they (up to now) have held their value reasonably well. I believe they were made in relatively small numbers for UK market, particularly the manual cars. They sound awesome with the sports zaust, & would be well with your budget. Some may say that a well specced S is a better purchase, but I love the GTS interior which feels special. Good look with your search!

POST 3Original post

Had a really well spec'd 981CS (virtually a GTS) for nearly 6 years. Did 5 euro tours in it and is the Porsche (also had 3 911's) I miss most. Have also driven a number of 718's (base and S), along with a 4.0 . The 981 has the best sounding and most free revving engine, but the 2.5T and 4.0 have way more torque which is really noticeable, and both have more modern interiors, and nicer steering. Personally I could live with any GTS, and I wouldn't let age get in the way if you preferred the 981 to drive (suggest you try all 3 and choose your preference).

POST 4Original post

We’ve got a 981 Cayman and a 4.0 718 Boxster at the moment and the Boxster replaced a 2.0 version that i had for about 18 months. The first thing you need to do is go and drive all the cars on your list because they are all different. Only you will know which one suits you. The 981 sounds brilliant but feels a bit old compared to the 718. The 4 pot 718s sound different (not worse) to the flat sixes but in my opinion are the best sports cars Porsche make today for the money and the 4.0, again in my opinion, takes it to another level but obviously costs a bit more. I bought the 4.0 and I doubt I’ll ever replace it as it’s that good. But don’t take my word for it

POST 6Original post

There’s no reason a 981 won’t last many more than 5 years. If it’s stretching your budget then go for the 981. It’s way more than fast enough and you’ll save a packet.

POST 7Original post

From a 981 perspective, a well-specced S is literally 99% of a GTS for 20k less, which makes it hard to justify the leap, until you factor depreciation - therefore total cost of ownership may nudge towards the GTS. They are a scream. The revvy character of the engine is a perfect match for the chassis. Depends what you’re after, but in the Uk I can see a case for the base, S or GTS. I haven’t driven the 4.0 but had a decent amount of time in the 2.5, and as effective as they are, it isn’t the car for me. Plenty of low-mile 981 cars about, but properly maintained ones can take stratospheric miles. Be picky on spec, because it it does make a difference to the car and experience. As suggested, you ought to drive them all and see how you go. No bad options among them. Edited by Royal Jelly on Saturday 7th October 04:38

POST 9Original post

You can't go wrong really they are all good cars. A mint 981S that is well within budget might be a good option then you could always change for a GTS in future. You can put the extended Porsche warranty on vehicles up to 15 years old. Edited by 130R on Saturday 7th October 08:21

POST 10Original post

You need to go and test drive some, especially if you’re wavering between the turbocharged and n/a models. For some people, a particular model just clicks. I personally wouldn’t be put off by the age of 981, especially if it’s a weekend car. It’ll have a crap sat nav (or none) and no CarPlay but so what? It’s not that kind of car.

POST 11Original post

Test drive has to be the answer but I’m very happy in a 981 gts Boxster, they really are amazing. All Porsches will be spec sensitive too, had a go in a mates pdk, pasm cayman gts and it felt way more ‘cruising’ spec than my x73, PTV, manual Boxster. Still fun but different. Volkswizard and petrol ped have some interesting videos on YouTube but make sure you watch the petrol ped correction video too where he admits his main conclusion was completely wrong 😂 @boxsteradventures on the gram

POST 12Original post

981>718>987 without question. 981 still feels modern and is rawest and sounds best.

POST 13Original post

I’ve had a Cayman 981 S and GTS, and driven a couple of 2.0 982/718s. Nearly bought a 718 4.0 Boxster but cancelled the order in favour of a 991.2 T. Some very good advice above and I agree with the sentiments.

POST 14Original post

130R said: A mint 981S that is well within budget might be a good option then you could always change for a GTS in future. For what reason(?)- an S with the options that suit the owner is very little different to a GTS. When I was looking once I had decided against a 4 cyl I would happily have bought either an S or GTS as both were in budget, as long as I got the right spec. My non negotiable options were PDK, PSE and definitely leather rather than Alcantara, I ended up an S. Brilliant car, well happy, right choice for me.

POST 15Original post

Very happy with the 981 GTS. Longest I've ever kept a car.

POST 16Original post

Agree with those who say drive each one. If it's a keeper though, and you live by Wales - so close to some of the best B roads in the country I would lean towards the 4.0. It's a sublime car, and will be epic in that sort of environment.

POST 17Original post

This gets posted semi-regularly and most of us say the same thing - you need to drive them all. Whilst to a layman they all look like Caymans, they're going to leave a very different impression on you. As one poster said above, one of the models will just click. My experience was: - I wanted a 718 GTS 4.0 but didn't want to wait the then 18+ months. - Test drove the 718 2.0. Liked the car but it didn't ignite that "I want one" feeling. - Test drove a 981 CGTS and left a deposit there and then. Two years later, I still love it. If you're the sort of person for whom the engine is the main event, you're going to struggle to look past the 981 GTS. The engine is peaky, revvy and sounds incredible. The 4.0 is a "better" engine everywhere except noise, but it's a lot more expensive. The 718 is a refresh or a 981.2 almost, so as you'd expect from Porsche, it is still the objectively better car and has a slightly more modern interior. However, the margins are insignificant in the real world and real life is not about driving lap times. You're going to fall for the one that makes you feel that something. If you struggle to find a 981 CGTS to test drive, I'm not a million miles from you and you're welcome to have a go in mine

POST 18Original post

981s are quite old now and the steering is not great, especially if you're used to getting good feedback. 718 EPAS is better with more feedback and a quicker rack, as is the interior. A lot own 981s on here and don't like smaller turbos but any criticism is a bit overhyped in my view, a bit of an internet myth really as the newer engines are far more powerful with accessible torque much earlier in the rev range. Is very noticeable on acceleration where you get pushed back into your seat. 981s sound good, but sound is only one dimension of the car I'd be more interested in driving dynamics and power than annoying the neighbours and redlining at every opportunity just to get basic performance out of it. Fun for five minutes but a pain to live with. So I'd personally buy the latest version you can afford . The 718 has a number of improvements over the old versions and more options as standard. With the 981s I think you even had to pay extra for bluetooth! Crazy. Also the PDK in the 981 is set up in the wrong way, i.e. push forward to change up a gear. Annoying. Definitely worth avoiding those awful steering wheel 'buttons' in the 981 as well. I found both irritating but thankfully both issues are fixed it in the 718, i.e. pull back to change up and only steering paddles for the PDK. No issue if you want a manual of course. I'd buy the newest low mileage version you can afford with an official warranty and ignore the usual internet myths really as there is a lot of nonsense repeatedly trotted out on this forum for sure...

Oh that's a good point - avoid the awful multi-function 981 steering wheel. It's hardly ever seen on the GTS anyway, but the sport design one or whatever it's called is much better and the paddles work properly.

julian987R said: The OP hasn't replied once. Utter waste of peoples time posting on a forum if one isn't going to engage. Sorry, been thinking about this all weekend, wondering how I could sum up my thoughts on the matter, and realised it would be quite a long post. I certainly didn’t intend to upset anyone in the meantime :-( So firstly, I have to thank everyone who took the time to post - it’s great to get so many perspectives from existing owners. The overwhelming response is that I should test drive all three, and that does seem very sensible. My local Porsche centre in Tewkesbury has a used GTS 4.0 on their site now, and I'm going try and book a drive for this Friday. I feel a bit awkward as it's way over budget (and the wrong colour!), so I know that I won't be buying it. I'm hoping that the 4.0 feels like the right choice, as that's where my thoughts are right now. The soundtrack may not be as exhilarating as the 981, but on balance, I think the newer car would tick more boxes overall. If the 4.0 doesn't feel right, I did have a really kind offer from rawenghey in this forum to drive his 981. I'm not sure I'd feel too comfortable taking up such offer (in case something unfortunate happened!), but I might ask for a ride as a passenger, just to get a sense of the engine. I can't quite bring myself to consider the 2.5 GTS, no matter how it drives, I think I'd always regret not going for the 4.0 One thing I forgot to mention is the colour - I really want a red Cayman. The reasons are nostalgic. First, it was a Guards Red 930 Turbo that overtook my friend and me in his Fiesta Supersport on the A3 outside Guildford that sparked my interest in Porsche (40 years ago!). Second, I have a picture of me and the first (and only) new car I ever bought, with my then girlfriend (now wife) - next year will be the thirtieth anniversary of that picture being taken, and I'd like to recreate the scene with my new car. So far, the heart is winning over the head and the wallet - it will be interesting to see if that remains true after the test drive... And again, thanks all, and sorry for not posting sooner, but I'll keep this thread up to date with any breaking news.

Even that is hard work with all the noise it makes, so clearly the car will have to go. I am so gratefull we are blessed with so many Netsperts© on here to enlighten us. 718CS an owner here. Having read your original post, I surmise your want is the best bang for your buck in terms of experience, rather than just the newest/most expensive for the budget. My suggestion is a 981 CS/GTS and spend the remaining budget on something else, like a garage makeover or even something really left field like flying lessons. You’ll be happier.

POST 31Original post

What a weird post. Acknowledges the only way to tell is to test drive them all, then writes off the 2.5GTS without having test driven one. Cars are way more than the noise they make...and should you wish to improve the performance further down the line you have much more scope with a turbo'd motor than an NA. ETTO, and enjoy your search.

POST 32Original post

I would even just test drive one of the cars. There is nothing to say that you will like any of them. I test drove a 981 GTS back when they were new and it did very little for me. Considering the massive hype at the time, I was quite surprised. People like different things. I think I would throw a 997 into the mix to get a sense of what Porsches used to be like for reference.

POST 33Original post

Hol said: My suggestion is a 981 CS/GTS and spend the remaining budget on something else, like a garage makeover or even something really left field like flying lessons. Another way to go and not a bad suggestion at all. I looked around and toyed with the idea of buying the 4.0, the only cars that suited me cost twice as much as my 981 Boxster S. Would it be a better newer car, without doubt in some ways, would it be twice the car for twice the money, no chance.

ETTO, and enjoy your search. Yeah I agree with this. The downside of the 981 GTS is it needs revs to really feel quick, and at that point it is very loud. For example, I got black flagged at Bedford for noise limits during a part of the circuit when I was redline 2nd into 3rd. I mean it's a lot of fun, and the sound is excellent, but you've gotta be in the mood. By contrast, the whooshy, more muted but effortless shove of the 2.5 GTS would be quite intoxicating I bet. I'm told the 4.0 GTS has much more lower down torque than the 3.4, so maybe that is the right answer. Even for completion, I'd give them all a go - the hunt is a lot of fun

POST 35Original post

There are only a handful of 981 GTS available from OPC and they are all 8 or 9 years old and £50-£60K. 718 GTS 4.0 start from low £60s with quite a few available under £70K. They are max of 3 years old and generally lower mileage. I read a lot about 981 being far better value, but with an apparent £15K ish gap in price and presumably a lot more wear and tear items to be replaced in the coming years as the car passes it’s 10th birthday, it doesn’t feel like a huge price advantage to the 981. And if the 718 retains a value gap over the older car, the value argument diminishes further. I’m not saying one car is better than the other, but if I were in the market for a £60K ish Cayman/Boxster GTS, I’d be looking at the 718 4.0.

When the keys were handed over, I thought I was going to hate it based on all the reviews I had read, but actually it was surprisingly good and the noise isn't that bad either. I think it's slightly better balanced than the 4 litre and the low end torque is better.

I had a 2014 Cayman S which basically had every option ticked, I fitted race headers and Stage 2 tune which took it slightly above GTS power and loved it, I test drove a 2.5T S after and said no thanks. I'd look for a late 981 S or GTS.

For road driving in the U.K., the 981 GTS is a lovely thing. I’ve never owned an older Porsche model so have no idea how miraculously better the steering is on previous models but agree I’ve never managed to miss a corner because of this local of feedback. If you want to track the car, the 718s (4 and 6 cylinder) are probably better. 981 S and GTS are virtually the same dynamically. But the GTS has a thick layer of ‘special’ applied to it. It almost makes no financial sense. But it is so much to cherish. Very limited numbers on the GTS helps I suppose.

I'll be really interested to see what you think after a test drive or 2. I'm on my 3rd 718 Cayman (2 x 2.0, now a 4.0 GTS), but have spent some time driving both 981 S and 718 S, and still have a 981 GT4. I've only owned manual versions. I know PDK is better, but cannot make myself order one. I was surprised how good the steering feels on any of the 718s given the online criticism, and the 4.0 GTS feels the best so far to me. Better than the 981 GT4 for road driving. I drove a couple of 718 S and 981 S around the time I ordered/got my first base 718 Cayman (2016/7!) The 718 S is pretty brutal in the low to mid-range in comparison, but the turbo meant it didn't feel like it had the response and driving precision of the 6 cylinder cars. For me (and I'm still running it in - only up to 4500 rpm so far), the GTS 4.0 exhaust note is quiet enough to be unobtrusive, but sounds absolutely brilliant, especially with the loud exhaust button pressed. A bit of a relief for the ears after running the GT4 as my daily drive all summer if I'm honest. As an all-rounder, I feel like I landed in the right place. Much more tractable at traffic speeds when below 2000 rpm, where the turbo cars don't have much go in them. Although you don't get quite the kick in the back of the 2.5 GTS at 3-4000 rpm, it's incredibly smooth and responsive, and even only using up to 4500 rpm it feels like it will be a quick car. One thing I can guarantee you. This is a first world problem, with no single correct solution. They are all really, really good. Liam

The question of gearbox is interesting, and they both have their merits. At the risk of sounding like a bit of a Muppet, I think I'm more concerned that car is the right colour and has Bose, than whether it's a PDK or manual. I've always had manuals except for hire cars and the Base 718 at the PEC. Each seem to have their merits - I enjoyed the rapid changes (and launch control!) of the PDK, but the auto blip on the manual sounds like it would be quite enjoyable (and flattering). Just waiting to hear back from the OPC to see what they say about a test drive.

I am in an M2 Competition at the mo as i need back seats (not standard at all), its very quick, handles like its on rails, stops well, but I miss that flat 6 noise and feel. I too had a BGTS and CGTS and miss my BGTS the most for those blasts through Wales with the roof down and hearing the downshifts. Overall though the 718 GTS 4.0 is a better car, polished, and improvements made, unlock the sound and you have an brilliant car.

I’m a bit impulsive with car purchases and normally buy first one I’ve viewed, bad trait as heart wins over head. I had decided a 718 2.5 GTS was perfect option for me with having come from a string of modded turbo VAG cars prior to the 987. Found the perfect spec at Nottingham OPC, paid my £1000 deposit and went up to test drive and purchase the following Sat. Referencing my car buying prior form this was as good as a done deal….. Took the car out for the test drive unaccompanied and immediately knew it wasn’t for me. I’m not going to say it was the sound particularly as the car was quite fruity sounding but it was the throttle pedal feel, it had lost that magical linear instant connection to the engine and felt much more like my Golf R had….this massively disappointed me. Performance wise it was ace and destined for power upgrades as that’s what I do but it was a no. Went back to dealership gutted, sales guy then offered me a test drive in a 4.0 GTS which I obviously bit his hand off for. Minute I started it up hairs on back of neck stood up and I was instantly in love, test drive further confirmed and I came back and left a deposit on a new build car. 2 weeks later I’m getting impatient already and irritating wife so she said just go and look at what’s available. Test drove few other options (M2C, Supra, TTRS) but all missing the special feeling I got from the 4.0 GTS. Then saw Portsmouth OPC had a manual 981 GTS in Guards Red for sale, so I went and test drove and loved it. Sounded better than the 4.0 (Sports mode is outrageous sounding for a standard car) and drove beautifully - but it had full leather interior option and horrible multifunction wheel. I obviously cancelled new car order and bought it following previous form! 18 months later and I still adore my 981 GTS, it now has a 718 2.5 GTS interior and a 718 4.0 GTS steering wheel so fixed it’s spec issues. It was £40k cheaper than the new car too. As others have said you really do need to test drive these cars. I’d have a 4.0 GTS in a heartbeat but it would need exhaust modding to match my 981 and how it sounds. Good luck in your search, and have a sneaky pic of my 981 That looks great. Got anymore pictures? Are they 718 wheels?

Well, that didn’t go quite as expected - went in for test drive in one car and came out having paid a deposit on another. It’s a ‘22 plate GTS 4.0 PDK with 1600 miles on the clock. Carmine red, GTS interior, Bose, reversing camera. The dealer’s painting the black wheels in platinum for me. Unsurprisingly went a fair bit over budget. Needless to say, the test drive was exhilarating - ferocious acceleration that actually left me with a bit of motion sickness! On the twisty B-roads, 2nd and 3rd gears in manual was all I needed. When in automatic and Normal, I was surprised how quickly the car settled down to 6th/7th when in traffic/cruising. Before I forget, I’d just like to say a big thanks to everyone who took the time to chime in on this thread, even if I managed to ignore most of the advice :-) Just got a long two weeks until collection day. Pictures to follow… Congrats! Great shopping

Sorry guys, had a brain fart yes they are 718 Carrera S wheels, here are my 981 Carrera S wheels for comparison, subtle but different. The wheels I would really like are the 981 Spyder/718 4.0 GTS wheels - keeping my eyes open for a set to come up for sale. Edited by Riskins on Friday 20th October 12:16

Couldn’t help grinning like an idiot as they roared past :-)

Well that's my humble workshop totally shamed: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=18... Definitely looks like a good place to store a Cayman GTS 4.0, I am envious to the point I might even do something about it. I'm liking my one more and more (Cayman GTS 4.0 that is, not workshop!) It's surprisingly almost as thirsty as my 981 GT4, despite protestations round here that it's no less fuel efficient than a Cayman 2.0. Not even close, but first world problem, it's a really good car. Liam Edited by LiamH66 on Monday 30th October 00:36

If anyone's interested, the garage makeover was quite simple, and I don't have any particular manual skills. The hardest part was shuffling around tons of junk while working on it. Did everything in the wrong order, as follows:- 1) Lay floor tiles from The Garage Floor Tile Company (https://www.garagefloortilecompany.com) 2) Painted the walls in Sandtex smooth Plymouth grey 3) Built shelves from cheap studwork timber and clad in 9mm MDF 4) Added more electrical outlets (for CTEK charger, perhaps...) 5) Put up plasterboard ceiling (no skim coat, just taped and filled the joints) and painted (Tip: buy a board lift from Amazon and sell it after on Facebook - way cheaper than hiring when working a few hours each weekend) 6) Replaced the LED strip lights with LED panels from ToolStation Probably could be done in a few weeks, but it took me 3 years!

Mine is now up to about 1200 miles, and I am really enjoying it, a phenomenally good car in every way (aside from a squeaky drivers seat that I really must get looked at when I have a moment). Thanks also for the info that might make my workshop scrub up a little better. I’m not rushing it, might be longer than 3 years. Liam

Been out driving it today I trust? Went out in it yesterday for the first time. Had a sedate run down to Newent to drop wifey at the hairdressers. Went the long way round to enjoy some nice Herefordshire/Glos A/B roads. Then headed to towards Malvern to drop by my parents to show them the car. Mother wasn't in, but Dad had a look at it - the conversation went something like:- "What is it?" "It's a Porsche" "Is it new?" "No, second-hand. Nearly new" "I've never really been interested in cars. As long as they start in the morning" Spent the rest of the visit talking about how reliable his Honda Jazz was! Ho-hum. On the way back down from the Malvern Hills the sun was shining and the Herefordshire countryside was visible for miles. Then Tears for Fears, 'Closest thing to Heaven' started playing and I nearly lost it (emotionally, not car-crashy!). Heading back down to Newent, I accelerated hard out of a 50-limit into an NSL and had the traction control light flicker on at about 80. Wasn't expecting that! Got home safe and sound, fuel down to 3/4 tank (yikes!). Car still pretty clean and dry (I don't think it's ever seen a wet road). Parked in the garage, I was amazed how much heat was coming out of the car as it sat there ticking and smelling of hot oil. Lovely! I think we're going to have some memorable times together. And to think I was test driving a Polestar in the summer...

My dad is a petrol head in his heart, when I had our 981 BGTS in 2016 I showed him what was in my garage, he said "why didn't you get a 911 son" lmao he crushed me haha.

Yeah they absolutely chug heat out of the vents on the side. After hard driving / track work, you can smell the heat as soon as you open the door Cracking car, enjoy
