- Replaced with fresh fluid (again normal Pagid, will flush with Typ200 later most likely).

Suggestion
First things Id so is get rear arch liners out and clean out / check for corrosion and also get the front bumper off and clean out the rads just for piece of mind.

I should proably note there was some (very few infact) metal particles in the filter, from what I've read about a couple here and there isn't the cause for major alarm (car drives/sounds fine too, no odd noises) - when the clutch is being done I'll make sure the IMS is inspected for total peace of mind.

- Diff / gearbox oil - one will be done with the clutch but I'll probably replace both (I have enough here, and for some reason I'd prefer it to be the same).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm sure everyone has been fed up of my posts/messages about picking up a 996.1 with aerokit!
This one got linked to me, and initially I ignored it due to the fact the car was missing a reasonable amount of history (quite a few years, but only ~4k miles actually being covered in the time) - having spoke to the seller and gathering more detail, I decided it was worth a look.
Took a trip to go and look, the car was presented reasonably well (honest at least) - it's reasonably low mileage at 58k. Had the car looked over by Warren at Weston Porsche (wanted to check mileage etc) and he noted a few bits (which I'd spotted some of at the viewing).
Decided to take the car - I was open to a bit of a 'project' car - which I could make my own and this fits the bill well (and was priced accordingly IMO).
Have ordered the following to get started (this weekend coming):
- Discs & Pads all round
- Millers CFS NT+ oil (10L)
- Oil Filter
- Air Filter
- Cabin Filter
- Engine Mounts
Plan on doing the following over the following weekends:
- Low temp thermostat
- Water pump
- (and a coolant change)
- Spark Plugs (and maybe coils depending on how they look)
- Sort a new, decent - bonnet badge - the current one is a plastic one
Eventually:
- Cruise control...
All advice on things worth doing/tidying up whilst I'm here would very much be appreciated (especially if they're cheap...)!
Don't actually have many photos - will try and take some good ones over the course of the week (plan on giving it a good machine polish).
It joins a Clio 197 (with some choice modifications, LSD etc)
[/list]
BIG congrats Tobie!
Looks lovely and as mentioned hopefully this will me the start of a long relationship with the Porsche 911
Well done again and maybe see it at a meet in the not too distant future!
Also Nicky's right ... aero kit is the way forward
100% agree - for now my plan is to focus on getting the engine, gearbox and brakes into a known good state. From there the plan is to drive it a bit and see what crops up. Later (hopefully) the plan is for coilovers, but then I need to decide if it will stay C4 or if I'll drop the front diff and use C2 hubs... :?:
Looks nice, quite rare in that colour with the aerokit.
First things Id so is get rear arch liners out and clean out / check for corrosion and also get the front bumper off and clean out the rads just for piece of mind.
Whats the interior spec?
Deffo agree with getting the rear arch liners out and pulling the bungs and flooding the sills with suitable product to stop/prevent rust. Whip the side skirts off too if you can.
I would also be checking the PAS rack pipes along with the brake pipes at front and rear which run across the car. Both can corrode quite substantailly.
Also check the clutch slave hose, again the completely crap quality metal crimp joints porsche used on the ends can rust away to nothing allowing the clutch hose to come adrift when you least need it!
Exhaust manifolds....... bolts securing those to the heads rust away to nothing. Pig of a job to replace but common 996 problem
Door membranes, pour a hose over the car and check the carpet on the bottoms of the door cards,
AOS bellows - These split, pretty cheap and easy to replace
Jacking points, due to the underseal being scraped off by use of jacks you can get corrosion starting here, Get on top of it sooner rather than later!
All of the above come from the experience of owning a aero kitted 996.1 myself.
Thanks, this is a super helpful list. Most of these bits were inspected, but I plan on giving the car a good look over myself.
Manifold bolts are the one job I am really unsure if I fancy doing myself. The cost of a jig + the hassle might not outweigh getting someone reputable to do it.
I bought the jig for £380, did the job myself in a few hours and then sold the jig on for £300 so total cost for the job was not bad at all. Other than the jig you just need a drill, the ability to measure to make sure you don't drill to deep and patience. I've heard 'specialists' *cough* like to charge a large amount for this job.
No need to run C2 hubs if you convert a C4 to rwd. You can sacrifice your driveshafts or get a scrap set and split the CV joint so you just put the stub axle with the ABS ring back on the car. That way it can be a completely free conversion.
Thanks for the kind replies everyone.
Good weekend working on the new car. Managed to get all 8 bleed nipples undone and replaced with stainless ones.
- Replaced discs & pads (Pagid all round for now, may upgrade the friction material later but wanted a 'clean base').
- Replaced with fresh fluid (again normal Pagid, will flush with Typ200 later most likely).
- Bled the clutch whilst I was at it (actually made a noticable improvement).
- Replaced air filter.
- Replaced oil (Millers Nanodrive 10w50) and oil filter (Hengst).
I'll note it here incase I ever forget, but car has covered 58231 miles.
Whilst I was there I did a bit of minor cleaning of the arches and gave the calipers a really good clean. Will need to go over it all again at some stage (run out of time) but definitely an improvement. Brakes are noticably better too.
I should proably note there was some (very few infact) metal particles in the filter, from what I've read about a couple here and there isn't the cause for major alarm (car drives/sounds fine too, no odd noises) - when the clutch is being done I'll make sure the IMS is inspected for total peace of mind.
What's next?
- Getting the car booked in for clutch (was planning on getting this done anyway) & an IMS inspection, I'm close to RPM, Porschacare (and probably some others) - would be good to hear where people would recommend.
- Spark plugs, water pump, thermostat.
- Diff / gearbox oil - one will be done with the clutch but I'll probably replace both (I have enough here, and for some reason I'd prefer it to be the same).
It looks like some of the water pipes have seen better days... do people replace with OEM or any silicone/aftermarket alternatives any good?
Finally - once all this is done I can start to think about inspecting/tidying up the suspension. Shout if anyone thinks I might have missed anything.
aaaand some pictures:
Hi Tobin, you got one then. Good for you. Looks lovely and like the wheels
What year/bearing is this one?
Good work on the service parts. How did you get the car on axle stand on the jack point?
About time I shared an update.
Pleased to say progress has finally been made on the Porsche! Over the previous weeks (or months even) I've found a bit of time here and there for the following:
- Proper clean/polish/tidy up
- Cruise control retrofit
- OBC retrofit
- Modified shifter (by Alex)
- Waterpump
- Low temp thermostat
- Drive belt
- New idler pulley (one was not round anymore...)
- Bearings for the other pulleys
I also took the car over to Porschacare in Stevenage for a clutch replacement, at 59k I figured it was worth laying out for for peace of mind. Controversially (r not) the IMS had some (minor admittedly) play - so it was replaced with an EPS item - some people have racked up some fairly high miles with these / trust them.
I've got the following to fit over the coming weeks:
- Graphite Grey Centre Console Delete (no longer made, was lucky to source this from someone!?)
- Continental Stereo (want to keep the interior looking fairly OEM)
- Spark plugs (just need to get these done now, everything else servicing wise is done)
Cruise control retrofit wasn't especially hard, a little daunting admittedly for someone who hasn't owned the car/worked on them for very long, rather intrusive (I wanted to run the loom with the existing loom). Plug and play though - and the guys at Autostrasse in Coggleshall kindly coded it in for me! Cutting/crimping B7 fuse into the cruise looms was done using a duraseal heat shrink connector (I wanted something 'proper').
Alex shifter is great, for anyone who's fitted one - consider a little grease on the cups/ball joint on the gearbox end - it took the gearchange from 2/10
(10 being easy) when cold, to a good 7 or 8/10 when cold and a 9.5/10 when hot.
Nothing massively notable otherwise, waterpump etc wasn't too bad really. Messed around more than I'd like to admit with 'the bolt' on the water pump, once you've figured out how - no big deal, until then... fun.
One thing I've found is a tracker in the centre console section I'd like to remove (I have no plans to use it, if I did I'd get a new one) - has anyone had experience removing a Motorola tracker - deMort maybe? I'd like to do it 'properly' if I can.
I also plan to tidy/polish/seal the headlights.
Finally, I'm thinking of a set of GT3 rep seats (from what I've understood the quality can be pretty good) - any suggestions on where to buy?
Some random photos. Went for a metal impeller pump, read about the pros and cons - happy to change it as a service item every couple of years so metal seemed like a fine comprimise, especially as I'd like to do a trackday or two eventually (just got back from a Nurburgring trackday in the Clio!)
