Hi,
Met a few Porsche buddies for early coffee. One said his dealer has a Cayman S in the show room and we can go check it out. I already saw on on Wednesday but tagged along for the comaradiare. He bought many Porsches from this salesman so we got first class treatment. Ths salesman is a certified Porsche fanatic (instructs for TracQuest and PCA) and after he checked out my RUF BTR, we became instant buddies.
His Cayman S is a U.S. spec. car and was wedged between the display rack and a C4S. After some Porsche talk, he was so excited he actually started the car so we can hear the exhaust note. Now I'm used to an air-cooled flat six engine with a RUF free-flow exhaust, so I have little bases for comparison. However, at idle the Cayman exhaust does not distinguish itself. He revved the engine, but below 4,000 RPM, and the sound was much more pleasing. It's more of a wail (with a sense of urgency) than a menancing, hey-look-at-me type of deep rumble. That is fine by me as I don't like the attention a loud exhaust note attracts. I have a hunch that when the Cayman revs above 5,500 RPM, the exhaust could be quite impressive. Kind of like a GT3 at high revs.
At the end of the day, he allowed me to 'move' the car to feel the clutch. There was no room to fully let the clutch out, so I basically feathered it for a nudge forward and reversed back to where it was. The clutch up-take point is excellent, (like most Porsches I've driven) and the brake does feel softer under engine power.
He promised me a full test drive mid January. He said they will own the car by mid January, and if I want this car now, I can reserve it for MSRP. In fact, they have 4-5 UNSOLD deliveries between now and January, so if one can live with the color and option level, one can buy one in the next two months. I'm actually a little surprised by that.
There is no doubt that the car is a great car. I told him about the RUF 3.8L engine swap and he thought that would be a hoot. I think when I'm ready to buy, he'd be my guy.
This little excursion sure makes my Thanksgiving fun.
