Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone on here changed their belts? Mine are fraying and I have found a chap on ebay that will replace the belt in the original mechanism for £40. However the part that is putting me off is pulling the interior out and breaking loads of plastic clips and it rattling when all put back together. Does the interior go back in ok?

POST 2Original post

Following this as I'm in exactly the same quandary.

POST 3Original post

Are they failing MOT's or just looking a bit scruffy?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have not had the car long enough to get it MOT'd so not sure but it looks scruffy so that is enough for me to want to change them. I found this thread in the 997 forum which I think gives me enough confidence to tackle it. http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=123708&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

POST 5Original post

Workshop manual can be downloaded here .. http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=83491 Body interior / exterior . On a Diy scale i would class it as 5/10 with 10/10 being your a mechanic . Be aware , you will need to disconnect the battery and not reconnect it until after you have refitted the refurbed belts .. if not and with them disconnected and ign on it will trigger a fault code and a light on which can only be turned off with a tester . The orange tabs on the front belts .. it slides back first .. then you can unplug them . Most of the panel fixings are metal pressed in place tabs .. brute force to remove .

POST 6Original post

This afternoon I thought I'd give this ago. About 40 minutes in and swearing like a sailor while trying to get the slider / fitting off the B pillar I finally gave up in frustration. Ian I managed to get the outer cover off the belt slider (On the B pillar) but from there was at a loss as to how the hell that fitting off the car. Any advice gratefully received though I think I may have come to the conclusion that this may be a job best left to the professionals!

POST 7Original post

seat belt height adjuster .. yup its a bitch .. even i don't like removing these .. Best advise .. lever with a plastic trim tool at the base where it goes into the bolt head .. a small blade screwdriver is sometimes needed to dig into the center of the plastic clips half way up .. it looks like 3 seperate clips and its behind the adjustor . It doesn't matter if the unit falls apart .. i have a video of how to refit it .. It's the dam side clips .. they are there both sides .. I have used 2 screwdrivers in the past to lever these .. i have also been lucky in levering the hell out of the base .. its luck of the draw i'm afraid .. As mentioned .. i have to remove these as part of a Targa roof rebuild .. Its actually the worst part of the entire job !!! Best analogy .. think of a crab grabbing each side .. you have to lever its claws off to remove it .

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies. I have got a sample coming so will tackle it soon!

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Samples came super quick! Requested them yesterday afternoon! They pretty much all look the same although the one on the top left is OE Porsche. It is slightly darker and has a different weave to the others. I prefer the brighter red at the bottom right but will probably just go for the standard porsche ones. It's all academic however if I cant get the belts out the car!

POST 10Original post

Well thanks in no small part to the encouraging words of deMort I now have the four belts out of the car and ready to send off, probably to FTDS. Thank you Ian. A couple of observations for those considering removing the belts themselves. Firstly it's a bit of a pig of a job, certainly if you're 6' 5". News just in, there's not a lot of room in a 996 to move around! The bit that had me stumped yesterday (Getting the B Pillar fitting off) was just a matter of technique. For reference the plastic slider cover pulls straight off to reveal a plastic metal cage below that covers the mounting bolt. This cage ALSO pulls off to reveal the 17mm bolt to undo. From there I removed pretty much the entire rear interior. Trim, carpet panels and the whole damned lot. Maybe you could get away with less but in the constricted environment I needed as much room as I could get. Will use it as an opportunity to condition all of the leather panels anyway. So. Remove all panels, remove 17mm bolts then remove reel units. Go inside, get yourself a cold drink and breath a sigh of relief. Hopefully it'll all go back in again... there seem to be a hell of a lot of pieces sitting here in front of me now.

POST 11Original post

First off can i just say ... My Hat off to you Sir ! I don't have much wriggle room at 5" 9 and less than 10 stone lol .. seats removed is the only way to get a bit more space i'm afraid ...... it would have been very tight for you . Carpets don't need removing but to be fair .. if i need access to something then i take out whatever i need to make my life easier .. thats what its all about at the end of the day .. To learn .. to accomplish and not to have a hard time doing it . Rear quarter panels have a clip that slots down over a bar next to the seatbelt .. if you haven't seen it then have a good look at the panel before refitting . Bear in mind .. if you get stuck then a picture or two will help me tell you where the bits go

POST 12Original post

Thanks Ian! I'm honoured by you kind words! Just to say I didn't remove the carpets themselves; just the rear carpeted panels behind the back seats and the panel over where the rear wiper used to be. Made getting to the back real much easier. Oh and 5' 9" and 10 stone!? I could have a party in the back of mine at that size! 6' 5" and 19 stone, not to mention getting on in years and being more effected by gravity than I once remember... I think when the belts go back in stage one will likely be 'Smear myself in goose fat"! Oh and following on from deMort's advice; to remove the rear quarter panel there are snap mounts along the top so pop the top out (Below the window) and once that's free you need to pull the panel UP. There are no snap fittings along the bottom, only vertical retainers. God these belts better look pretty damned good after all this...

POST 13Original post

I had red belts (factory) in the C4s and they were cool, just a nice wee touch. However make sure you keep you hands clean as anything away from black does seems to show up dirt from use.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well done Dagerous! When we get a break in this dreary weather (preferably not during the working day) I will give it a shot myself!

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Managed to get the belts out over lunch time today. A lot more force than I thought was needed to remove the panels! The trim removal tools I hastily bought for a few quid were worth their weight in gold. I also learnt that before you disconnect the battery you must have the key in the ignition and turned one click otherwise the alarm will go off. Unfortunately I learnt this lesson the loud way... Off to FDTS tomorrow as they are not far from me and they will turn them around in 45 mins
