I've got everything ready to be installed by the OPC.
Leading evidence: 'Install by the opc' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'angle of the photo' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install by the opc' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

For my next oil change I'll look into buying one from the other brands from the US although a lot of US based online stores don't want to ship overseas which means I'll have to use one of the re-shipping companies.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

But, I got on this spin-on bandwagon late, and a lot of the discussions on this were from a couple of years ago. Except for one where the whole thing came out because the son was doing the filter change :-)
Anyway, is the consensus that this is worth doing? Even with the hassle of not being able to cut open the filter easily? No, there is no Harbor Freight in NZ, cheapest filter cutting tool here costs around $100 :-(
I've booked my car for a service at the OPC next week and have asked them to do this work, and they might get confused or not.
I'm in the camp of trying to do everything I can to extend the health and life of my engine, even though I have a rebuild scheduled for Jan of next year. So I have the spin on filter, use Dt40 for daily driving and switch to XP9 for track days. I've also installed the X51 deep sump kit.
The DT40 has increased wear protection (research zinc and phosphorus) which the major brands significantly reduced thanks in part to the EPA.
Do it. One theory of failure is particulate unfiltered oil from a failed bypass in the OEM canister. For $150 it is about the cheapest protection you can get. And who cares about opening the filter. Get a magnetic drain plug.
I have no evidence to back this up but I swear my car runs better on Joe Gibbs DT40. I switched over for the first time about 200 miles ago. I have 120k miles on the car. The engine seems to run a tad quieter and the amount of white smoke I would get for a few seconds after start up has decreased.
Interestingly enough, I've had some "hunting idle" issues on DE/AutoX days. Yesterday, I ran XP9 and had no such issues. I'll find out at the track tomorrow if it was a fluke or if it really made that big of a difference. The XP9 is only rated at 750 miles so I filtered my DT40 through a 55 micron filter on a 5 gallon bucket and will put it back in when I'm done this weekend.
318touring im in the same boat being from Australia! Where did you get your spin on adapter from? My only concern around this mod is having to provide the correct filter make sure the dealership installs the filter correctly every service. I'll have to research where to buy the correct filters from. Planning to have mine installed at the end of the year during the next service.
Anyone know if a dealership/OPC can supply any of the recommended filters?
This would prevent me have me having to bring them one when my car gets serviced (although I know bringing my own would be cheaper provided I can find them in Australia!)
I know the recommended filters are: Mobil 1 M1107, K&N Gold HP-1007 filter or NAPA Gold 1042
Wonder if there is a Porsche part number perhaps for an older air cooled 911 spin on filter that could work? Would seal the deal for me getting one next oil change. Just for the less hassle factor (or laziness whichever you'd like to go with!).
The closest looking filter was: 99310720303 from a 993 but I dont have any specs on it.
The other filters that were visually similar are:
99310720303
94410720108
90110720309
93010776403
93110770100
Again im not sure about the specs on these only that they are genuine part numbered filters that look similar to the recommended ones!
I wonder why they changed to cartridge for the 996 when the 993 and older had spin on...
Hey @dan_189 my Aussie friend!!
I bought the filter off design911.co.uk when I bought a few other things as well. It's a K&N one
http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod13...Cayenne-Turbo/
Your OPC can and will try to give you what you said you want but it won't be on them if it doesn't actually fit! You still have to pay whatever part you've ordered.
I don't know whether one can send a couple of bottles of engine oil from the States to either NZ or Australia, even through the re-posting services.
Hey!
Ah right nice one, was hoping L&N/Charles could clarify but it's not a deal breaker I can get the filters here in Australia (not easily but I can). Would just make life easier of perhaps it took a 993 filter!
Looking like this is something I might get
Ahh the joys of not being in the USA owning a 996! Oh well
So someone actually did ask if there was an OE filter compatible with the spin on:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...nt-filter.html
Actually gave me the part number to a Ryco filter which I could use but I think ill just source my own Mobil1 and have the dealership take off the price of the filter in the standard service.
There was another thread stating that if you have the spin on you should change it more often than the oil?? Any merit to that?
Dan, filter aside, why don't you change your own oil? Not hard at all, saves a bit of money, and helps you know your car a little better. Takes less time than driving to the dealer.
Hey southern man, good point. On many other cars I have done the oil change so I'd consider myself a fairly competent backyard mechanic with most jobs. With this car I'd rather have all the receipts and records of the maintenance
I know it would cost me a lot less but the complete service history is worth it for what I have in the car value wise.
@dan_189, yes I saw that in regards to frequency of changing the oil. I think that came from Jake or Charles? However they've always advocated 6 months/5000 miles anyway.
I'm also with you in terms of getting the receipt and being on a friendly term with the OPC. Especially in Wellington there is only one OPC. They in fact spent a couple of hours troubleshooting a leaking transmission gasket FOC.
I do have the LN bearing so I think that is close to the recommendation anyway. I do suspect that a shorter filter may need changing more frequently as the standard one is slightly longer? There is a long 993 filter wonder if that could be used.
Totally agree, having good contact with an OPC is important, we have 2 here in Melbourne
@dan_189: yes as part of the annual service and vehicle inspection
The cardboard (method) has saved me once where it showed small drops of coolant which otherwise would have been completely absorbed by the concrete floor, and I wouldn't know that a seal has started to fail.
Yup Jake is correct.
I bought the adapter and filter from design911.co.uk as I was in London (UK) last month. Free shipping + VAT (tax) refund. Win-win. That was the filter they sell.
For my next oil change I'll look into buying one from the other brands from the US although a lot of US based online stores don't want to ship overseas which means I'll have to use one of the re-shipping companies.
Price I have to pay for living at the end of the world :-)
Ah the trans-Tasman solidarity comes to the rescue, thanks @dan_189!
Actually I'll be in Melbourne in 3 weeks time for a conference, perhaps I should buy one and get it sent to my hotel ....
Anytime!
Here's the listing no affiliation just one I found in my research! Seeming it fits a Holden gen 3 5.0L there's a good chance you might be able to get one at a Holden dealership! I might make some inquiries.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/180584791835
They say these aren't as good as the napa but for us that would be a very expensive filter once it's shipped here from the US!
Yup that sounds the one and only for AUD18! We seem haven't been able to get an answer whether we can use air-cooled oil filters with the adapter. Never mind.
Here's the Porsche filter cartridge cleaned and ready to go to storage.
Yeah no response in that from anyone, damn.
I wonder what the bore scoring rate is like or if it's even an issue for the 993s as they have 2 spin on filters.
993s have no bore scoring issues, as they have Nikisil bores. Nothing touches them unless its as hard as a diamond.. Diamond hones are whats used with Nikisil bores. Thats how hard they are.
The aircooled oil filters are not proper for the LN SPOFA unit, use only the recommended filters with this product. We developed it with a specific set of filters, and please don't try to "make it better" by using something different. You will work backward, guaranteed.
Thanks Jake, much appreciated.
List of recommended filters, for future reference (and anyone searching for the same answer):
Napa Gold 1042
Platinum 1042
Mobil 1 M1107
K&N Gold HP-1007
Anything else?
318touring, autobarn sells the K&N hp-1007 for $22.95.
https://www.autobarn.com.au/k-n-oil-filter-short-knhp-1007-z160-sp35862-knhp-1007
There is an autobarn (airport west) on the way from/to the Melbourne airport. Ask your cab driver to stop off at autobarn Matthews ave there is an off and on ramp for that street from the freeway.
anyone know the torque spec for install of this item ?
my next oil change is due in about 1500 miles

regarding the filters, I found this

As in 6 months in the engine or 6 months of being used? A lot of these cars, mine also, only see the outside world once a week. Is 6 months as DD == 6 months in the engine?
6 months calendar time... No matter if the engine is being fired up, or not... The oil is still in service.
The absolute worst thing for engine oil is sitting around in the sump. Sitting around kills these cars.
Thanks for the clarification Jake!
I'm wondering the damage done to the ones that have two-yearly service schedule. I believe this came in for all 2004+ cars.
Perhaps this was done for marketing, to make these cars look better to leasing companies?
It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard... Hell, we love it.. What an economic stimulus for our entire industry.
If someone has my engine, they are on a 6 month/ 5k MIle service interval at maximum.
Jake - Have you ever seen any studies related to oil degrading just sitting on the shelf? I'm assuming it only degrades inside an engine because it's "contaminated". The reason I ask: sometimes I buy a batch on sale and it sits for two years ....
How does oil go bad sitting in the sump?
I had a tech tell me it "goes bad" in 90 days. I suspected he was quite full of poo and simply trying to boost service fees.
You have lots of research to do. Sitting static in the sump builds higher "total acid numbers" than anything else.
I have 21 Porsches... I change the oil every 6 months whether I drive them or not. Same for my military vehicles and daily drivers too.
Having done my own research first hand for 15+ years, no one has to "tell"me anything.
This is a good question. I am planning to get the spin on adapter but according to LN "Porsche approved oils of 0w40 and 5w40 are acceptable - use of thicker oils not recommended."
My Indie put in Swepco 15W40 last change, I'm hoping to continue using that.
EDIT: Unless Jake tells me I am insane.
At the moment I have 5w50 M1. And yes, I don't have access to any DT40 Joe Gibbs(?) magic liquid in New Zealand.
I will probably use M1 0w40 or Castrol 5w40 or 0w40, although from what I read 5w40 or 5w50 oil will be better as the engine gets older.
I've just started using spin-on from early June, and have been using 5w50 previously. It's a Porsche A40 oil anyway.
Fingers crossed hoping that this thread won't trun into an oil thread!!
Just one.. And she'll build engines, or do taxes to pay her way. Its old school under this roof. Nothing is free, or given. Only earned, and respected.
