They checked a few areas and everything good so think I need to drive a few other 996 turbo engines to get a feel for what they sound like.

Actually said it sounded fine on checking but as I can't see has ever being changed , got it replaced anyway.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Think I need a new water pump. Nee to try and confirm, Any advice on here. OEM pump? Is it a big job, reading online looks like dan be done engine in , is there any issues people have come across.
Thanks in advance
J
I got a Meyle pump having had good experiences with the brand on my bmws. Have now learnt that its generally not thought to be all that but seemed very good quality to me, and it's not leaked in the 5k miles I've done this year. Plastic impeller which I wanted as it prevents damage to the block when the bearing fails. You've got to modify the gasket with all the waterpumps which is a little odd.
It's an easily diyable job although there is one bolt which is a real pain in the arse and needs to be undone a fifty of a turn at a time.
Replaced mine with a Pierburg which I was informed is the OEM supplier for the 996.
I used a cut down socket to make it slightly less awkward to get that bolt Shalmaneser is talking about. All in all, it's probably one of the easier water pumps I've replaced. Worth doing the low temp thermostat for a few quid more while the system is drained. That adds another nice awkward bolt that will test your patience and ability to piece together an elaborate arrangement of socket extensions.
Did mine a couple of years ago and put on a low temp thermostat while I was at it. I made sure the mating surfaces were scruppulously clean and used hylomar blue on them also. It all went together fine with no leaks at all. About Three hours' work if I remember correctly. Not especially challenging, though a little awkward at times, and annoying to deal with draining and refilling the coolant.
I never used a vacuum. 996 is one of the easiest cars I've ever refilled and bled. Note the quantity required, fill slowly, start, watch the bubbles, top up as needed, cap on, bleeder open, drive, top up further if needed.
I read of someone else saying it was difficult but for a first stab at a water-cooled car they at least got one thing right in making the bleeder valve the highest point in the system so it bleeds itself pretty well.
Well Cotswold Porsche replaced Water pump Today. Actually said it sounded fine on checking but as I can't see has ever being changed , got it replaced anyway. They were happy with the engine sound. Think it's just me not being used to the turbo engine noise. Just seems odd to me bit rattle but it seems that is the noise these engines make.
They checked a few areas and everything good so think I need to drive a few other 996 turbo engines to get a feel for what they sound like. If anyone is Shropshire based with a 996 turbo, let me know. Hopefully I can compare.
Thanks

I knew when my pump went as a kind motorist ran over at the traffic lights to let me know my car was doing a wee all over the road. It also sounded like someone smashing a hammer into the car over and over.
Fixed on the drive. Fitted new thermostat too. Which had to come off again as it leaked when we filled up with coolant. Really difficult bolt position on the thermostat probably added another hour to what otherwise would have been an easy job. Did the belt at the same time.
