No smokers pack in my car, but the other 12v sockets, does anyone use the cigarette lighter style battery conditioners/chargers with their cars?

Suggestion · Original poster

I've had a bit of a search on the internet and from what I can find it seems that the only way to use a trickle charger is directly on to the battery on these newer cars?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No smokers pack in my car, but the other 12v sockets, does anyone use the cigarette lighter style battery conditioners/chargers with their cars? I've had a bit of a search on the internet and from what I can find it seems that the only way to use a trickle charger is directly on to the battery on these newer cars? Any experience? I'm of to the OPC for something else on Saturday so will ask then, but before I get sold an unnecessary charger I wanted to see what others have found

POST 2Original post

Mine charges via the ciggy lighter in the smokers pack, don't know about the other socket, but can't see why they would be different?

POST 3Original post

I have no problem trickle charging my 981 using the socket in the cubby hole between the seats. Haven't tried the one in the optional smokers pack.

POST 4Original post

Agreed, I use the socket in the passenger footwell, but my OPC told me any will do. I put my 981 on the CTEK yesterday.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers! That all sounds promising - now I need to get myself a charger, CTEK MXS 5.0 looks up to the job

POST 6Original post

Just been out to check my car. To my surprise both sockets appear to be "permanent live". [I didn't hang about to see if they shut off when the car goes to sleep.]

POST 7Original post

I use a CTEK in the socket down in the passenger footwell, works perfectly.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just as a quick update on this - I ordered a CTEK MXS 5.0 and a lighter charger adapter and it looks just fine through the passenger 12v socket, in fact it seemed to think my battery was not in great shape when I hooked it up, and although its fully charged now I'm obviously not driving it enough! Thanks all
