Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use daily in all weather' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean behind' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

This will be my first winter with the 996 and although it wont be used much in bad weather I am keen to protect the underside as much as possible.

Suggestion
On the 996 the arch liners trap a lot of crud especially the rear so remove them and clean behind.

I carefully run my fingers along the return lip of the arch to ensure all mud / detritus cleared out.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What are people's thoughts on using something like this....

Should I take the plastic wheel liners off and spray under there? I presume it's not worth spraying wishbones and other suspension components as they are a consumable and will likely fail through wear rather than rust?
I'll be on my 6th winter this year and never put anything on. Car gets used daily in all weather. If anything I'd give the underside of the car a rinse on a weekly basis with fresh water.
Was considering manufacturing an underside sprayer and start selling them. Something like this kind of thing:
Winter takes its toll regardless. That's why I drive an old worthless daily I don't need to pamper and the 911 comes off the road until spring.
I gave my wife's car its pre winter clean the other week. Wheels off, wheel well and underside clean, then coat all suspension with ACF-50.
I don't know why I bother mind as we change it every couple of years anyway.
Alex you'd want that on wheels. :thumb:
There's only so much dirt that comes off without physically scrubbing it though. A contactless wash isn't that effective unless chemicals are added which cause problems of their own.
Thats a good idea, get snowfoam coming through first, then a good rinse. I would be interested for my Range Rover. Porsche shall be tucked up by then, but will be good for my OCD wash all year. Get machining :thumb:
Thanks for the responses guys.
It's going in for a major service at 9 Excellence on the 1st nov so hopefully I will be able to have a good look underneath then. I might ask them if they would remove undertrays, steam clean etc if not I will do it myself.
I usually do under the arches on our cars, pressure washer first (Nilfisk angled nozzle) then with the hose. I carefully run my fingers along the return lip of the arch to ensure all mud / detritus cleared out. On the 996 the arch liners trap a lot of crud especially the rear so remove them and clean behind. IMHO it is this crud that holds salty water against the body that does the damage, exploiting any chips / cracks in underbody paint. I got over a kilo of road crud out from behind the rear plastics on mine - doubt they'd ever been done but luckily no rust.

Interesting point about the wishbones etc. When my car was having the geometry set up at centre gravity they sprayed around the wishbone rubbers with Wurth underbody wax. They said that ally corrosion can track under the metalastic bush causing it to separate from the wishbone.
Cosmoline (if you can find it) seems to be rather effective. The chap in the video linked below did a test of a few different options.
