Having said that, I've just bought a 997GTS4 with a manual box, a normal handbrake, and fitted winter tyres.

Indeed - I'm sure it would be very useful on a Driving Test, where you're warned beforehand that the examiner will slap the dash shortly (and you're constantly watching him out of the corner of your eye), but in everyday driving the poor execution considerably outweighs the potential benefits of the system.

I still use the hand break everywhere I was taught to use it - when the car is stopped - and got really p'ed off with having to constantly lean forward, think push or pull, before moving off ( or rolling backwards on numerous occasions).

That was in a pre-ABS car though (Opel Manta GT/E), but I think the point was that if you use the handbrake shoes as well as the pads on the discs you're able to apply more braking force.

Electronic handbrake? Transmission tunnel the height of the chinese wall?
This is what its all about. Hydraulic steering, Proper handbrake, chubby manual gearlever, coupla buckets and just you and the car.... The newest cayman and boxster look like small Panameras for gods sake!
thats just perfection
And head for the route napoelon...
Thing is though, even those buckets in the OP are heavy things with airbags added, less said about the colour! How about this for focussing on the job;
Yessssss. I thought it only me. What happened to the interiors of modern Porsche, and who decided that we no longer require a traditional handbrake?
You know where you stand with a traditional handbrake.
And...they're off.
How many pages can this run to, arguing the advantages a normal handbrake adds to the driving experience?
Rally drivers and car park doughnut merchants need not apply
My 987 interior is pretty bland. I thought about updating it but don't see any inspiration in either the special models like the R or the newer 981 so just live with it. Quality is also poor, some of the trim you only have to sneeze on and it scratches.
I read once some advice, I think it was from Ari Vatanen (sp?) speaking about the driver training courses he ran, that an emergency stop can be 25% shorter if the handbrake is used as well. Luckily I had the presence of mind to do this when I needed to and avoided rear-ending someone. That was in a pre-ABS car though (Opel Manta GT/E), but I think the point was that if you use the handbrake shoes as well as the pads on the discs you're able to apply more braking force. I agree, massive Transmission tunnels in rear wheel drive cars !!! what is that about ?
The more I read and see the more I feel like canceling my GT4 !!!
As my GF said on another thread, they are all blending into Audi mode as are the new bread of owners !
It gets to a point you may as well buy an Audi and save a few esp on the Macan models.
I would even take the new MK3 TTRS over a base model Cayman for £45k

Tend to agree that the new interiors are a bit "grand touring" versus sports focused but comes in handy for road trips to and from the epic twisty's, the lack of manual handbrake really sucks though. Folks can choose spec interiors to provide some sense occasion but choose not to, I remember I was lambasted (on PH) for specifying an orange interior due to the apocalyptic effect on future resale values. Zzz...

I don't think this can go on that long - I doubt that anyone likes the electronic "hand"brake. It reminds me of a road test of another car saying
that a particular switch was ideally suited to someone with a 9" limb growing out of their kneecap. It's pretty redundant on a PDK (fortunately) but I would find it a real pain on a manual. Even if it remains electronic it would be far better off on the (no)transmission tunnel.
Whilst I agree with the general comments about the electronic handbrake, when driving a recent manual 981 courtesy car I was relieved to find out that it disengages automatically when bringing the clutch up slowly, so you don't have to feel around under the dash mid hill-start!
By the time I handed the car back I still hadn't got the hang of the handbrake toggle switch though; pushing when I should have pulled, pulling when I should have pushed... bloody irritating!

Me too. Always liked the two-tone orange/grey combo on the conifgurator but not actually seen it for real. Looks great IMO.
I live out in the sticks and when we get snow, I drive with my left hand on the hand brake ready to 'assist' the rear of the car through bends. You can't do that with your e-brake!

Did you know that if you press and hold the electronic handbrake switch then "Emergency Braking" is activated?
Was instructed to do it at 90mph with no hands on the wheel at the PEC Silverstone in a 991 turbo.
Was amazed to find out this applies to all P cars with electronic handbrake, tried it on my Cayman and it works - full emergency stop with no skidding. Remarkable really.

Love it when it snows drifting round corners in my shopping trolley using the handbrake but the wife hates it!
Anybody tried opening their drivers door to look back while reversing into a garage etc ??
The E handbrake automatically comes on, now that's annoying.

That is annoying. On the Z4 I had it would put the car into neutral when you did that. Stooooopid cars!

It was one of Pentti Airikkala's tricks, on the basis that most car of the time were set up with too much front brake bias when not fully loaded.

I have no doubt this has been asked before but
What is(are) the benefit(s) of the Electronic hand break?
When I had a lone car with it on I just didn't understand it. I still use the hand break everywhere I was taught to use it - when the car is stopped - and got really p'ed off with having to constantly lean forward, think push or pull, before moving off ( or rolling backwards on numerous occasions).
Why has it be but just out of easy reach?

Starting to get close to Audi now, but the mk3 TT has move the game on just as Porsche caught up...
GTS looks great btw with GTS pack and buckets.
But the new AMGT looks awesome inside vs a 991.
The issue with Porsche is you can spend 150k on a Porsche and it looks like a £37k boxster inside !!!
Just not a fan of he hugh tunnels in rwd cars, just takes up the small space you have, and the 981 has no nice dash shelf for shades like the 987.2 or a phone shelf.

It took me a long time to realise that you don't have to release them - you just drive off and they release themselves, (electronically!). It's actually pretty useful in daily driving.
Having said that, I've just bought a 997GTS4 with a manual box, a normal handbrake, and fitted winter tyres. That's a proper set-up! Hoping for much snow,,,

Looks nothing like an Audi interior. I assume Audi still share door handles, indicator stalks, switch gear etc. with Skoda, Seat and VW cars and Vans??
At least Porsche parts are exclusive to Porsche.
Re the 987 interior, it's ok....but very tight if you're tall.....981 has so much more room. I am not a fan of the electric handbrake though - after 40K I still forget if to push or pull!!!

Trouble is when it does release automatically it makes a rather unpleasant clang and a bit of a jerk - leastways it does on the two 981s I've tried it on. So I try not to use that facility.
Must admit , I don't understand that (mine releases in a similar, clunking fashion) as our Q5 leccy-brake applies and releases itself as smoothly as you like? It also has an auto button, which smoothly applies the brake every time you stop and is mounted on the tunnel with a pull up for on and push down for off action.
Seeing as Porsches are so like Audis nowadays (got halfway back from the pub and found I was in my mates A5 instead of the CS last night
), you would think they could have got that bit of technology from them and made it better?
I HATE electronic handbrakes! They are horrid.
Its progress for progress sake, an answer to a question nobody asked.
Must everything be electric and automatic? Can we not be trusted to operate anything anymore?

Cheaper I guess ??
I bet they are - the plastic ratchet on my 7.1 GT3 failed and the new handbrake lever, thankfully covered under warranty, was a staggering £900 - I kid you not!

While I'd certainly agree that the 981 one IS horrid - I don't think they have to be, and electronic ones do have a purpose. With a relatively heavy car is quite difficult to engineer a good manual handbrake on rear disk brakes. The last one I tried on an oldish 911 was absolutely useless - even though it passed it's MOT no problem. In the 981 case it's just that the switch is in a ridiculous place and it's action is totally unprogressive.
Don't see a need for automatic operation though, hillhold functions or, for that matter, transmission creep engineered into
dual clutch gearbox. Seems a bit silly to have energy saving measures like auto stop/start and coast and then to deliberately waste energy by introducing creep. (Transmission creep was/is an unfortunate result of the inefficiency of torque-converter automatics)

Horrible thing; its not clear of you push or pull, unlike a lever you can't tell if its engaged when you're stationery, and trying to parallel park on a hill is a fecking nightmare.

Having been used to my fathers Mercs (the foot brake release are in that position) it was easy to adapt to in my 981.....but still would prefer a normal handbrake.
Love my interior, feels spacious but compact enough that you can access the passenger side door bin. Everything you 'need' is within arms reach and the extended dash leather is a great touch. The alcantara feels nice too
What utter b
ks this topic is really. One of the compelling reasons I bought my 981 BGTS was the sublime interior. Compared to the other cars I was considering like the Jaguar F-Type (spare parts bin interior), Evora S-IPS (cheap Pioneer head unit anyone?), BMW M4 (feels like 320d rep mobile inside) it's several classes above the competition. When I first sat inside an S at my OPC I felt snug, luxurious, cosseted in leather and it had a sense of occasion and total class.
Better still, the 981 interiors feel more resolved and thought out than the 991 and SUVs in the range, with every control and switch in the right place, and a lovely tactile satisfying click to switchgear and stalks.
In my GTS with the optional GTS Interior Pack I am hard pressed to find a cabin surface that is not clad in leather or alcantera; in fact, there's not (the centre console is 100% leather and carbon fibre).
There is no 'transmission tunnel', it's the centre console stupid! And I actually like how it raises upwards away from the driver, gives it a 918 Spyder type of feel. If you spec the Sports Design steering wheel and aluminium finishes it really does feel like a very special place to be, a luxury sports car as it should be.
As for the inevitably tangent topic of the e-handbrake, I love it, it just works. It's automatic when setting off and doh! it took me all of one day to figure out it's push to engage and you don't need to disengage it manually, ever. Seriously, a PS4 or Xbox console controller is infinitely more complex than a simple 981 handbrake button (or are some people here thick as planks perhaps?).
As for 986/987 interiors .... Bloody awful, and I for one am gobsmacked people are lamenting the 'good old days' of cheap plastics and space grey metallic faux metal surfaces. Thank god for the influence of the VW group, it's lifted Porsche's game no end.

Absolutely agree. Test drove a few of the latest boxsters and caymans as I do like the external looks but internally just too blingy and with a huge unnecessary 'transmission' tunnel!! That's why I love the simplicity of my 987.2 Spyder - stripped back to the basics. No radio, no air con, no sat nav, just a few basic buttons to work a very effective heater and to switch on a lovely sounding PSE.
Be interesting to see if they make the GT4 and new Spyder with so much bling.

I think it was Mr PDK. Electronic handbrake drives me mad in my manual car, especially as they don't fit a proper "hold" function as is standard on Mercs. Press the pedal down harder when stationary and "hold" should engage.
In automatics where electronic handbrake is integrated with the transmission shift it makes a lot more sense.
I'd happily pay cash money to have mine replaced with lever!

Love the Silver Rose Interior.
The only thing I'm not keen on is the later 944.2/968 dash - much prefer the square-dash from the early 924/944.1 cars.
I also quite like the new 911-50 interior:

Hmm... Is there an optional package of tweed trousers, barbour jacket, a pipe, beard and black labrador? ;-)

Yes - fantastic interior. I nearly bought one last year, just didn't really "want" that car enough after I'd driven it. I'm still looking for an early 944 lux, white, fuchs, pascha interior. I think that would be perfect.

Yep, it's the P06 'Cotswolds' package. £3,021 incl. 12-month subscription to countryside magazine subscription of your choice.
I actually prefer the 918 interior over all the old stuff, unfortunately the manual box must disappear to make it a reality.
Unfortunately the 991 interior is a half way house and pleases neither camp. It needs to be binned and the 918 version introduced.
