Hi all, just joined, but in fact bought my car Jan 2012, it's been a great car for all that time, full
Porsche
history until this year and with very few problems over the last 12 years of ownership.
However, now the roof is causing a host of issues:
Roof switch intermittent, won't always close, then after repeated switch actuations closes. Massive clunk when I pull the close lever.
Roof on opening is imbalanced each side, so scrapes the boot clam cover as it retracts, about 2" difference each side
Roof elastic snapped
Roof Rattles so loud, it's becoming unpleasant to drive
I am based in Kettering UK, but can't seem to find any specialist anywhere near me to help. Any suggestions please? I don't mind paying for a fair service cost, but
Porsche
wanted £750 just to diagnose, which seems very high to me before we even get to the repair cost.
Thanks Alan
Put the top in service mode.
Open up the clam shell and check the plastic rod connectors.
If they are ok. one of the transmission gears is broken.
You can disconnect both rods and raise and lower top manually until you fix it.
It's not really hard to repair just time consuming.

Agreed, check the common break points (plastic rod ends) and the transmissions. Ideally they should more together.
Beyond that, you'll have to look carefully at the mechanism from side to side - something seems to be loose or broken. I know on my car, there was a broken part on the mechanism, which had to be replaced. I did have a shop that figured all this out, but it just takes some time and effort. No other way around it.
Hi
@MisterP
- Sorry to hear about your top! Yes, they can be finicky. Agreed per the above troubleshooting; when they fail they can be troublesome.
Keep in mind that what has likely failed are the plastic parts (ie, plastic cups for the rods, plastic gears in the transmissions). There is a TON of torque being produced, and the plastic is designed to be the weakest link and break first -- as opposed to your motor. If it is uneven, odds are one side has failed. I'd also check to make sure your top edges are seating correctly above the windows; that can make it more difficult to close the top.
As this is your first post, please make sure to introduce yourself in the new members section (ideally with photos - we love photos!) before anything else; it's a very strong tradition here before posting tech questions. Let us know you get on with it, and I'm cheering you on from the other side of the pond. Cheers!
