Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 996 tiptronic. After driving the car and putting it into park I cant remove the ignition key. To remove the key I have to spend some time wiggleing the shift lever before I am eventually able to remove the key. Does anyone have any ideas what this is or is it back  to the local dealers for an expensive fix?

POST 2Original post

Hi, It's either the locking mechanism (bar), or the cable has come lose from the gearstick, so the locking mechanism doesn't realise it's in park and hence release the key. You can usually get the key to release by spraying WD-40 gently into the lock and a bit of brute force to remove it. If you try moving the gearstick in and out of D, moving the wheel and wiggling the key, it will eventually come out. You'll then need to replace the locking mechanism bar which is about £250 IIRC. Cheers.
