Hi I'm considering purchasing an android Radio replacement for my very outdated
PCM
. Simply it would be real great to have a sat nav upgrade and all the kind of
Android Auto
features such as connecting to Android phone, Bluetooth calls etc I've looked on the likes of Ali express, but there are alot of options so therefore hesitant about making the wrong purchase, ie not compatible, or not high enough spec ram etc
only want for sat nav, radio, connect phone for Bluetooth calls
Mine is connected to CD multi changer never used
Has bose speakers
For example looked at this unit to possibly get £150 for the most basic, but they shoot up to £400 with acessories and higher mods.
Won't let me insert links, see in reply below
Amazon units seem to be £600 plus.
1. Does anyone have any recommendations? Can send me a link of good models proven to work
2. I have bose speakers, someone advised me this can be an issue re sound install?
3. What's the correct size of Ram/Rom to get as a minimum and processor also along with Android platform
4. Anything else I Need to consider?
5. Is the camera accessory worth it, looks painful to install into bumpers etc
Thanks all
Seem if link works on reply

I would check Don's posting for additional details -

- this link will take you to the very beginning of the thread. Plan on spending some time skimming over it - at 20 pages it's gotten a bit long.
Good luck!
That's another vendor selling the same product. The link in my thread on the top leads to the vendor most of us have been using - mostly because their support guy - Warren - has been excellent in making everyone from Planet-9 happy. We don't get anything out of your going there or anywhere else - but you might have a better experience with this vendor. Just sayin'..
Arw you all basically tethering off your phone to run all apps on the unit. So is your data usage pretty heavy. Just thinking ahead for my new contract I'm about to take out. Do I need go unlimited.
As I see the units only. Take their 4g sims to run independantly
Thanks
I don't know about 'you all.." I just know about me. I use a mix. I have a dedicated SIM card to a discount phone provider what I use for data only on the headunit. I also sometimes use Android Auto - which then connects via my cell phone account. Most cell phone accounts in the US now have unlimited data. It's not really unlimited - it works at peak speed up to some number you can set and pay for - and once you meet that number - the speed drops.
Thing is - the headunit lets me track my use on the cheap dedicated account - and that has a 3GB limit before it throttles down, and it's never gotten close to it. I think my peak might have been 1GB in a month. If you think about it - you're primarily going to be using it for music services of streaming heavily compressed music, and for maps for navigation. The unit comes with a rather pitiful GPS app that can use downloaded maps - so once you get them they're yours to keep. If you use something like Waze or GoogleMaps for navigation - it downloads on the fly as you're moving - but it also anticipates a bit and downloads for areas on a plotted route where the 4G signal might not be so hot.
When I'm using Android Auto - that's on my cell phone account - and it has a 3GB/monthly throttle trigger - but I don't think I've ever gotten close to it, at least not that I can notice.
Not sure if that answers your question - and not sure what's available to you in the UK for cellular services - all of the above reflects what's available in the Northeast USA. My results may be a bit unusual since I can draw data from two entirely different service providers -- each with a 3GB slow-down limit.. that I've never come close to.
HTH!
That's great, similar scenarios here in UK.
So bottom line
Android Auto
is your main usage so focus on GB on your phone. That way you also use your phone GPS which from what I'm reading is likely to be better than the native one on the unit?
Does it come with a mic / GPS / Radio antenna and if so, maybe a silly question but does the original unit have all these connections already that you can plug n play into new unit and are nicely hidden in car and located perfectly, or will these now be redundant and you need utilise new ones and place amateurly where you can best fit?
And why did you have so much trouble on your fit? I've a 987
boxster
and others sound like that fits perfect but intruiged as you've stated yours didn't sit perfectly
Did you have the
bose
speaker issue also or has anyone who can comment?
Thanks again
I'm just guessing you're addressing me? If not - ignore this post..
Actually - my use is probably about split. The navigation doesn't matter - I can run the same apps on my phone and use AndroidAuto to display them, and I have them installed as native apps on the headunit and can run them directly on the headunit (Google Maps and Waze) instead of the offering that came with the unit (that might be a much better app in Europe - it's a euro based application - iGo - which on other vehicles is not bad.)
Usually, I'll use the unit's 4GLE connection to the cheap carrier via the headunit until it starts dropping out - then I'll pull over and spend a second triggering and linking up AndroidAuto, and continue using it until I stop the car - so in that case I'm using my cell-phone plan data link.
it comes with everything you need to enable the options you purchase. If you pay for 4G-LTE - you get an antenna to use with it. It comes with a GPS antenna (these are pretty much a standard design, and if you're a clever boy you can make use of the factory one if your car was outfitted with GPS). Ditto on microphones - you can order one when you order the unit (it's an option) or if your car had a factory PCM with phone you can probably use the factory-installed microphone (behind the little grilles in the top of the steering shaft housing..) OR you can do what I did (and I think lots of other people have done - use the microphone that is installed in the unit itself. It's a small car.. so if you're stopped and it's quiet - it's about perfect. If you're driving with the top down - I'd suggest pulling over to complete your conversation - there is too much wind noise, and I suspect that is likely the case with the factory setup too.
BTW - what's with "amateurly"?? Is there attitude here? We don't do that on Planet-9. EVER.
The fit issue was because I was one of the early adopters - and both the manufacturer hadn't figured out correct brackets for the unit to fit into the PCM cage, and we hadn't had a member generously design a 3D-printed bracket that works much better than the ones that come with the unit- there was difficulty getting a factory fit with the unit. Using those 3D-printed brackets (which the member will sell you for about his cost, although shipping to the UK might be costly so you might want to print them up locally) means it fits like it's a factory design for the car. It's quite steady and well-mounted now. Fits like a charm.
And happily, I didn't have the Bose system (thank dog!) - I had the SPP (Sound Package Plus - or something like that) which uses an auxiliary amp to power ALL the speakers on the 987.2 (slightly different on the 987.1 - the PCM directly drives the woofers.) When you hook the system up to the car with SPP it pipes the rear speaker signals to the large door speakers, and the front signals to the dash speakers, all using the SPP amp. No problems, and using the built-in mixer on the unit, for balance and tone control, it's possible to get a well-balanced system this way. It's way better than the factory setup. It takes a while to sort it out, but the bandpass filters available on the unit make it easy to make sure the door woofers aren't bothered by any frequency above 300Hz, and that ALL signals 300Hz and below are directed to those same speakers. Frequencies above 300Hz can be directed at the other speakers (dash and mid-range in the door). That cleans up the sound, even with stock speakers it's impressive.
I went a step further since mine is a Boxster that usually has the top down - and added a kit that Porsche once made, and a Porsche dealer in the US has reproduced - that uses the two little end cubby chambers in the housing over the engine (right below/behind the roll-bar assembly) to add 4 wide-range 3.5" speakers. These are powered by an amplifier I installed in the frunk and ran to the back. They get their signal from the "amp-out" jacks on the unit, which are full range outputs. I can then balance out that addition to the system using the amp gain. It sounds quite impressive. And those small speakers make a difference in clarity when doing 80mph with the top down. I can listen to music at 80mph with the top down. They're not really "obvious" speakers - until you turn them off and realize it just doesn't sound as good.
