I've got a pair of brand new bump stops that I never ended up using I'd sell for a fair price.

All the videos I've found are replacing half the strut assembly which I imagine includes many more steps and tools than just replacing the bump stops.

I could be wrong, but I’m guessing the labor to replace just the bump stops might be close to that of replacing the whole damper.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

On my 987 Cayman S , the front bump stops have completely disapeared and the rear is barely hanging on. I will be replacing them with OEM bump stops from Porsche . The place I service my car quoted me 1.2k for the job, and seeing as about half that price is just labour I'm happy to do it myself instead. The problem is, I can't find any videos or tutorials showing how to replace just the bump stops. All the videos I've found are replacing half the strut assembly which I imagine includes many more steps and tools than just replacing the bump stops. Are there any tutorials on how to do just the bump stops? I've seen the hack where you cut it in half, however I'm not the biggest fan of this approach and would rather put them on properly. I've looked for tutorials for both the 987 and 997, however neither have tutorials for just the bump stops. The best video I've found so far is one by Cliff's Garage for removing the whole strut assembly . He has seperate videos for the front and rear.

POST 3Original post

Even though it's a sentimental journey, if I ever need new ones, I'd work it like Cliff. That's just how I was trained. To each their own but in truth it's just labor intensive with simple tools I have in stock including several spring compressors and there's no heavy lifting. However, I have a two car garage and the ability to make the job take a week and I recognize not everyone has that luxury.

POST 4Original post

I could be wrong, but I’m guessing the labor to replace just the bump stops might be close to that of replacing the whole damper. Depending upon mileage/age it might be worth considering.

POST 5Original post

Yes, I've seen this method. As mentioned, I would rather put it on the proper way without cuttting it.

POST 6Original post

Mine are falling apart but I am planning on new struts at 108000+.....especially since the labor is basically the same....

POST 7Original post

I have changed many shocks and used the crappy spring compressors with no issues. I would never spend the time and effort to change a bump stop. I would cut them for sure. If you are concerned about them falling off, maybe glue the cut back together. I would replace the shocks before I did just a bump stop.

POST 8Original post

As a side note, If I were to disassemble them as in Cliff's video, would I need to get an alignment as well? He mentions it towards the end of the video, but it's not clear on whether it is required.

POST 9Original post

Ohlins R&T are the best. If you own a Porsche please treat like a Porsche .

POST 10Original post

to determine how much of your shocks travel you are using, wrap a cable tie around the shock shaft and push it down on top of the shock body. Check from time to time to see how far up the tie has been pushed on the shaft. Be sure to cut off the ties tail close to the lock piece so it doesn't touch any spring coils. Old MX'er trick for setting up suspensions.

POST 11Original post

I've got a pair of brand new bump stops that I never ended up using I'd sell for a fair price.

POST 12Original post

The Ohlin's allow you to change there setting after they are installed. Ride height, compression/rebound and even change springs if needed. So, I would start with the normal settings and go from there. 5 years of use without any issues using this product. Combine this product with Tarett Cup LCA's and you have a winning combo that can be tuned for the street. From Tarett discription of the Cup LCA's; Solid thrust arm bushings and sealed monoball inner ends are used to eliminate the spongy rubber OEM bushings and provide a precision ride for improved feedback, steering response, and overall handling. Both are CNC machined from 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and are anodized red for a corrosion resistant and attractive finish. The solid thrust arm bushing is adjustable for increasing or decreasing wheelbase and adjustable caster. Plus increasing the camber to what number works for you. So Ohlin's for the ride and Tarett Cup LCA's for action on the road or track.

POST 13Original post

I've already gone and bought the front and rear bump stops from the Porsche Dealership. I'll be following Cliff's videos for putting them on over the next day or two.
