Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The engines are completely different to traditional 911's and there are few people who are in the position to viably rebuild them which explains why many just get replaced rather than repaired.
Leading evidence: 'Replace rather than' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace rather than' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

As to whats been done in the rebuild, you need a breakdown of parts used but from the costs described I expect the engine had a problem, was repaired, and a degree of betterment took place (a base rebuild costs £3k + VAT plus any additional parts for either repair or betterment).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone,
I am currently in the market for a 996 on an 02-03 plate. I have looked at a car and gone through it's history and found that it had a £6,000 overhaul done a few years back. Can anyone tell me what the overhaul involves and how it differs from an engine replacement? Is there anything to watch out for afterwards? Is this normal?
Many thanks in advance!
As you probably know 996 engines have a few weak spots and whilst most are very reliable the odd one will let go. It doesn't mean that the car has had a hard life or been abused or is a bad car - on most occassions its really just bad luck. The engines are completely different to traditional 911's and there are few people who are in the position to viably rebuild them which explains why many just get replaced rather than repaired. We have found to date that all the failures are repairable but on the very rare occassion if very extensive damage has occured it can be cost prohibitive.
Usually when we take an engine apart we are doing so to repair a fault - we've not yet had anyone who wanted it doing just for the sake of it which is understandable with the costs involved. Whilst apart its a good time to carry out a batch of preventative maintenance such as fitting new timing chains, cranks shaft bearings, IMS bearing, all new gaskets & seals, re-rounding of bores and fitting support rings, etc. (The reasoning being that whilst its apart its worth addressing the other potential weak spots so hopefully it doesn't need to come apart again for many many years). If these later optional extras are carried out then the engine is better than before the fault occured. If just the repair is carried out then the engine should just be returned to its condition before the failure. As to whats been done in the rebuild, you need a breakdown of parts used but from the costs described I expect the engine had a problem, was repaired, and a degree of betterment took place (a base rebuild costs £3k + VAT plus any additional parts for either repair or betterment). If its been done properly theres nothing more to look out for than with 996's which haven't had a rebuild.
Hope this makes sense and helps.
