Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi everyone, Hope you're well! I'm a first time poster so please be gentle I currently drive a rather old banged up Peugeot. I've been working quite a few years and saved up a nice bit of dough to upgrade especially now that I run my own company and so image is more important! I see a lot of Porsche Caymans on Autotrader going for about £15-18K. I know they are 7-8 years old but from what I can tell that shouldn't really matter so long as the car has been well looked after etc. I don't really want to spend more than £18K at the moment on a second hand one because I want the experience of having one but obviously can't sink all my cash in a car whilst building a business! Any tips or advice would be so useful. Like I say I'm a newbie so sorry if I sound stupid but just came across Pistonheads and really appreciate your expert opinions. Thank you!

POST 2Original post

The main point I would make is that simply because the cars get cheaper to buy as the years go by, doesn't mean they get cheaper to run. Go in with your eyes open and with a cash reserve in case something goes wrong.

POST 3Original post

The most pragmatic advice is to either A) ensure the IMS bearing issue has been resolved, and if not B) add the cost to resolve it (at most 1500 quid by skilled techs) up front. That should prevent the catastrophic destruction of the bearing. There are other issues with the M96 (such as scored bores and the D-chunk issue) but they're far, far less frequent. Strongly recommend a PPI by a well known Porsche tech as well.
