Apologies for another window regulator thread to add to the pile - I've found threads similar to mine but I have an extra issue I couldn't seem to find, so I'm just looking for an extra confirmation.
Here's the symptoms:
-Passenger window doesn't dip down/up on door open/close.
-If window is rolled down (not fully) and then I try to raise window, the window will instead go all the way to the bottom and stay there until I manually hold the window up all the way to the top.
-Passenger window can one touch up/down if already at full top or bottom.
-Disconnecting
battery
and reprogramming doesn't change this behaviour.
-
Extra problem
-window dip down/up motor sound can be heard when opening closing door handle.
Video of window door motor sound
Regulator definitely needs replacing, but with that "extra problem" is there anything else I should replace? microswitch etc? I think it should just be the regulator, but maybe someone on here knows better.
Any tips would be helpful, thanks!
I had to go look at your intro message to see what car we were talking about.. it's an '06
Cayman
? You might add that info to your sig or please remember to make note of it in the message you're posting. Your issue only made sense once I knew it was a
Cayman
(couldn't tell by the video, but it was hinted at by the A pillar..)
That sounds like normal behavior for a
Boxster
. The
Boxster
has a fabric lip on the edge of the convertible top (when the top is up) that the glass tucks behind when the door is shut. In order to open the door - the glass has to be lowered to clear that lip. It does it on interior or exterior door handle movement. There are switches that control this on the exterior and interior door handles. (These are indicated on the diagram as not being on the
Cayman
, only on the "convertible"..) Does the
Cayman
normally do a window drop when pulling the door handles?
What did this door used to do?
The quirk of the window going down when you think it should go up means there is binding in the mechanism that's causing the anti-pinch function to trigger. This is a function triggered by excessive motor current - like when someone's head is sticking out the window and the driver thinks it would be funny to put the window up and chop their head off (don't laugh - I personally know of an incident like this, but the guys head wasn't chopped off..)
Anyway - when it sees excess current being drawn it reverses the motor and fully lowers the window. THAT is a big clue that your regulator is kaput or at best needs lubrication. Also the glass itself could be binding if there is any damage to the channel it runs in.
One thing to note - disconnecting the
battery
usually makes the door control modules forget where fully up and fully down are, so auto-up, and auto-down are disabled. To teach the modules where the window should stop, car running, press the window button down, and hold it down until the window is all the way down. Continue holding it for 15 seconds. Then release, and hold it down again - maybe 5 seconds.
Some years need both, some years only need the initial "stall" to be taught.
Repeat this with the fully up position.
I'd go after the regulator first, then see how things are behaving. The fact that you can hear the window drop noise from the motor means it IS getting the correct signal, and the motor is responding, just the glass isn't.
YMMV...
have you tried lubricating the window/door rubber first? sometimes this helps reduce the window issues.
Don is right -the sound seems normal.
Having said that I've replaced both sides of my
987.2
regulators before - in my case the sounds were a lot worse....
Hey guys, thanks both for the response.
Yes I have a
2006 Cayman S
- I've added that to my signature.
Yes, normally the windows drop and raise (dip) slightly when you pull/release the door handle, and that is the normal sound it should make. I was asking to see if this was indicating something other than, or in addition to, the regulator being gone.
It does seem like this is just a regulator issue. I've replaced the window door
motor
in the drivers side door, so I'm familiar with what needs to get done to get access to the regulator.
And yes I did reprogram this passenger door after the battery was disconnected. It accepts the program, but all those other problems still happen.
Gonna go ahead and get that regulator replaced.
Thanks!
That sound in the video appears to me that the micro switches are functional, however no movement in the window glass would lead me to the regulator or drive mechanism. As far as models that operate like this, my previous ‘03 996/
911
had this same function, where the glass drops a few millimeters upon a light pull on the handle, and raises upon release of the handle, or when the door is closed.
