Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion · Original poster

Wife was driving back from the airport on the motorway, noticed the rev counter started droping off then picking up again, also noticed that the engine was reving high when she changed gear, suddenly no power at all when she pulled over there was a strong smell of smoke and a lot of smoke coming from the back end, car was towed home by the RAC, had a look this morning starts no problem, revs no problem but when you it in gear won't move, she swears that she could not feel any slippage with the clutch, but for some one who thinks the "E" on the petrol guage means enough, wouldn't take much notice (2000 C4)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

HI Wife was driving back from the airport on the motorway, noticed the rev counter started droping off then picking up again, also noticed that the engine was reving high when she changed gear, suddenly no power at all when she pulled over there was a strong smell of smoke and a lot of smoke coming from the back end, car was towed home by the RAC, had a look this morning starts no problem, revs no problem but when you it in gear won't move, she swears that she could not feel any slippage with the clutch, but for some one who thinks the "E" on the petrol guage means enough, wouldn't take much notice (2000 C4)

POST 2Original post

Sorry  to hear about your woes. Does sound like the clutch. Recently had my clutch changed but it didn't get as bad as you're describing. Methinks RAC should have taken your car o the garage. Let us know what you find :?: Ray

POST 3Original post

I had mine changed My indie said that it can suddenly give up the ghost without signs of slipping After he changed it he said"you certaintly have had your moneys worth" Burning, smoke and smell sounds like your clutch One more thing my indie pointed out was the clutch is designed to wear out on the pressure plate side before the flywheel side. This saves your flywheel.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers guy's, will get Indie to Pick it up tomorrow, is it also best to get the RMS done at the same time

POST 5Original post

Ask your tech to make sure you have the latest metal segment rms fitted already If in doubt change it out It's a long way back at a later date

POST 6Original post

Get Indie to swop rms and maybe the intermediate shaft seal as well. When I had mine done there was still a leak and it turned out to be the intermediate shaft bearing retaining bolts - they sit below oil sump level so I'm told. Ray

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

new clutch / RMS fitted and what a difference, wife thinks it's a new car and the best part of all was the bill £739, this included £40 charge to pick the car up as well

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Local Indy RPM in Glasgow (0141-946-0666)

POST 10Original post

£629+vat from Wrightune near Reading if you are interested. (closer to you than Glasgow) Ray

POST 11Original post

Was that for a 996 C4S ? Is that a Sachs clutch kit, baring any disasters I take you were in and out in a day. OPC Cardiff quoted me this morning £ 1400 inc IMS and RMS. Local Indy quoted £ 1250. So, £ 750 sounds very good.

POST 12Original post

Make sure Mrs Foamglass doesn't ride the new clutch now! Good price for all that work Eenjoy!

POST 13Original post

Yes C4S and Sachs clutch kit, the same that OPC use without the Porsche box. Took a day to do, you could even stay in a hotel at Wallingford, pretty town, and still be in the money! Ray :thumb:
