After doing an oil change in my
2008 Cayman S
, a new tapping sound just came up. I previously posted about a tapping sound, which has gone away after the oil change, and has now been replaced with a slightly less frequent, lower pitch tapping.
Any ideas what the source of this cound be?
Is the oil filler cap tight? You wouldn't believe the buzz a loose cap will make. Did you change the oil spec/viscosity? Did you do anything else while you were in there, no matter how trivial it may be? Does the tapping follow the engine speed?
A little more complicated but download a metronome function on your phone and use that to match the frequency of what you are hearing. Report back with that number and the associated rpm.
TheTheTheTheo- What oil and wt did you put into your
Porsche
. Give a little history about the car please. Maybe you removed a 50 wt and filled with a 40 wt oil? Did you just buy this car in the last couple of months? We need to rule out rod bearing and bore scoring as the cause of the taping! If you can get closer to the engine with your phone to listen to where the taping is coming from in the engine. Ticking in the heads do not count for either one of these two major issues, but if the noise is on the passenger side deep in the block, well more investigation is needed. Maybe a light in the cylinder to see if there is any trace of bore score through the spark plug hole in cylinder 5 and 6. To rule out rod bearing taping you need the oil analysis done now on that old oil and cut apart the oil filter to see if there are solid particles attached to the fiber billows of the filter
I removed Mobil 1 5W-50 oil from the car, and put in Mobil 1 FS X2 5W-50 oil up to the maximum line. I bought the car just over 2 months ago with a bore scope, compression test, and leack down test that all came back perfect. I'm not sure how fast bore scoring could set in but I wouldn't imagine it is that quick. Sound comes from the same place as the last ticking, side vent air intakes on the drivers side, haven't checked passenger side, but keep in mind that I live in NZ so the car is right hand drive.
I have some leftover oil where can I go for this oil analysis? I will cut open the oil filter
next
time I am over where it is.
The usual place is cylinders 5 and 6 which in your case are behind the driver. I would take the car to the shop who vouched for the PPI. You are correct in that if you had a clean bill of health for your car, it should still be in A1 shape. Makes you wonder if that shop did something wrong? If you can have that PPI done someplace else and they find issues that could have been there for at least 2 months, then you may have a case, but you live in NZ so who knows? The replacement costs are about $25k in USD.
Cap is definitely tight. The compartment is in the cabin and the noise is not coming from there. I removed Mobil 1 5W-50 oil from the car, and put in Mobil 1 FS X2 5W-50 oil up to the maximum line.
After doing the oil change I sprayed WD-40 on the bolts that attached the stock catback exhaust, but the bolts were too far rusted to get them off. This also involved removing the wheels.
The old noise was approximately matching engine speed at 600rpm idle, can't test this as the sound is now gone after the oil change. The new sound
Just did a cold start to do the metronome thing, the sound seems to have gotten fainter than yesterday, but still there. It's now about as loud if not a little quieter than my previous post. Anyway, the result of the test was approx 600bpm at 600-800 engine rpm. Maybe I am hearing a new version of the old tapping sound. Should the concerning one that came up yesterday happen again I will do the test once more.
Just did another test and it is coming from both the passenger and driver side air vents. Slightly louder on the passenger side but not by much (Right hand drive).
The car is going in for a service in about 3-4 weeks so I will talk to them there as to whether they think I should do another bore scope. Or I might just take it in and ask if they could take a listen to it for 30 sec. Regardless, I'll get someone to check it and might have to bring it up with the mechanic shop that did the PPI.
Great. Motul oil and you will not hear those clicking noises again.
Just had the car serviced and they found the source of the noise.
They found that it was coming from a pump that is related to the A/C, I can't quite remember the exact name of it.
I really should have found this myself, as the clicking sound only happens when the A/C is on.
They assured me that the sound was not bore scoring or any problem relating to the engine.
Isn't that a lovely thing to hear! Have a beer tonight - you deserve it!
