Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Please chime in on your thoughts of updating a 996 to 997 with the front end kit. My front end was in a collision and I need new parts. Should I consider the kit or stay with a stock 996 face?

POST 4Original post

I would definitely keep it stock and original. Half of my job in the collector car business is sourcing the correct parts in order to return cars to the way they were built for whatever year. Also, just returning stuff to stock- shifters, wheels, spoilers and flares, etc.. Some people wanted it to look like they had a newer model car than they did. Can you imagine sourcing a '74 nose for a '68 911 in the 1970's because it seemed like an update?! It happened more than you think. Surely some upgrades and mods are useful and can improve the looks or performance of a particular car, I get that. I just think about the poor people like me 20, 30 , 40 years from now...

POST 5Original post

I say stock too. You may get a different answer if you ask the same question in the 997 forum tho.

POST 6Original post

You're asking the wrong crowd here. Just be aware that a proper 997 conversion is going to run $10k minimum, unless you have a hookup. Then you have to decide if you want FRP kit or do an all steel OEM conversion. The latter will be at least 50% more.

POST 7Original post

Just put it back to stock and buy a 997. Then again, it's your car so, if a 997 front end on a 996 will make you happier with your 996, then just do it and ignore what anyone else tells you. After all of these years, I think it's funny how the 996' front end still bother's some people. More curious to me is why people who didn't like the front bought one in the first place. Was it just the lure of owning a 911? -Eric

POST 8Original post

I'd keep it stock. There's no reason to try to make a 996 look like something that it's not. I've seen a couple of 996 to 991 conversion kits out there. I'd never do something like that, but some people have done it. It's another option to consider if you want to change the look of your 996.

Are you implying the 996 is classic?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 13407595

It's not, though I shudder to think someone might be foolish enough to take 996 parts and put them on a classic like the 993!

POST 11Original post

The '99 is the best Porsche ever made. Once the world realizes this we are all going to be rich!!!!

POST 12Original post

Just add the OEM MK1 Aero Kit (if you can find one) and you have the best 996 body out there! All 996 MK1 Aero cars should have a separate forum, their cars are amazing!!!! https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...re-thread.html

POST 13Original post

Getty has some really nice front bumpers as well.

POST 14Original post

I fully agree with everyone here. As much as the 996 was originally hated by the purists for the non-conventional lighting design, Pinky Lai's creation can now been seen in many of the new Porsche designs. But there's another question to answer... that is, why make it something it's not? Would you rather wear a $50 fake Rolex or genuine $50 Timex? Personally, some people would say this is a "tribute car" thing or making it what it should have looked like, but the reality is that the 996 is one of best selling Porsches ever in the history of the company and they have confessed that it saved the 911 from extinction. If it were me, I'd put it back together with OEM parts and make it look like it just drove off the factory line.

POST 15Original post

Just the name "Pinky Lai" still cracks me up. As for 991 conversion, that is a bit harder in pulling off since the 991 is dimensionally quite a bit bigger than the 996, where as the 997 is very close in dimensions to the 996. However if you're going to go big, might as well go all the way like this Frankenstein, except do it on a 996. LOL

POST 16Original post

Because your Porsche has sustained damage, why not do a 997 conversion. As mentioned there are a lot of parts required for the swap, and might be costly unless you go with 'used parts' ie. fenders, headlights etc. There have been numerous 997 conversions for you to research costs and components needed.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I mean, who was curious about the conversion! Do you guys realize how much the front end actually cost to replace?! It's nuts. All my cars I've ever owned have been stock. I just figured why not look at my options. Each 996 headlight with washers are 2700cdn! Enough said! Where would you recommend I look for parts? The car is in Canada. I know the usual suppliers, suncoast, pelican.

POST 18Original post

Here is a decent deal on a conversion kit. The only draw back is the fenders are fiberglass and not OEM steel construction... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-986-...3D271890222504 Pay a little more and get steel parts... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-996-...vfsGbA&vxp=mtr Regardless, it really boils down to what YOU want to achieve in the over looks of the car.

The first one has been to be a proven kit by a couple members that have already done it. It's probably one of the best FRP based kits out there. The second one, well it's sold by Wicked. Horrible sales/support/fitment. Stay far away. That's exactly it.
