Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Leading evidence: 'starter' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'starter' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace based' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Fix could just be to tighten it as they are adjustable or to replace based on age, wear and tear.

Thanks chaps, I'll try replacing the belt first (it seams the cheaper option).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

996 C2 Cab, 2002. Sometimes when I start up there is a horrible loud screeching noise coming from the engine (it happens 1 out of 4 times). It lasts for only a second or so, but it turns heads (for the wrong reason). Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks in advance
Sounds like a classic loose belt to me. Fix could just be to tighten it as they are adjustable or to replace based on age, wear and tear.
Can't think of what else it could be.
Pete
I agree that it sounds like the polyrib drive belt. It has a sprung tensioner, so there's no adjustment. They do 'glaze', so I would get it changed. £25 + 1/2 hour (tops) to fit.
Intermittant starter solenoid fault.
Every now and then the solenoid will stick causing a horrid squeal.
So I am told this is quite common.
Starter is a biatch to get to and quite a big job... ask 'Richard H' on here for advice
Thanks.
Thanks chaps, I'll try replacing the belt first (it seams the cheaper option). Is there guidance anywhere on the web (as one of the enginers at my work has offered to do the job)?
Cheers, Gary
Starter 100%
I had the same problem and it was picked up on recent service that it was the starter. Bought new one on ebay for £200 and fitted it myself.
The link to the rentech website is where I got the tips but after speaking to my local indy after I had changed it he tells me i would have been better removing the alternator. There is 1 bolt which is an absolute c@nt to get too and the rubber boots which hold the throttle body in place is also a nightmare to get back in position.
Give it a bash.
hi
have had exactly this problem with mine by the sounds of it. did post about about it here:
http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=38608&highlight=
still very intermittent and never got to the bottom of it.
would be very interested to hear the outcome. would be great if you could post details/prices!
thanks!! :thumb:
Hi. I might be barking up the wrong tree here but before you put your hand in your pocket....have you ever noticed whether the car does this just after you've either washed the car or after it might have been exposed to heavy rain?
I only mention this because your description sounds
exactly
the same as what happens to mine (996 C2 2003) after I've washed it.
I always take the car for a spin to dry the brake discs off after I've just washed it and I get exactly the same screech from the engine bay about 7 or 8 seconds after the engine starts. This noise lasts for a split second and doesn't do it again until I wash the car the next time. Mine has a brand new belt and has always done the same since I've owned it (four years).
I've always assumed (and my Indi agrees) that it just water on the poly belt that causes a bit of slippage between the belt and the various pulleys that it goes around.
Just another angle for you to consider.
Adrian.
Hi Guy's, in my case the rain doesn't seem to make a difference (better or worse). Lately it has only been doing it 1 out of 5 times (but it still makes me cringe every time it happens!). Think it might be the solenoid. I'll post the outcome when I have got to the bottom of it. Cheers :thumb:
