The clutch is bitting at a good point ( not really low or near the top) it feels fine and it hasnt changed - even when fault occured.

Got it into the garage and just went through the gearbox raising the clutch in each gear to check engagement and it seemed to engage two gears at the same time ( car wanted to move forward but seemed to be locked).
Check linkage and cables at the gearbox end first though

Ive found another box for £1400 so might do the swap and look at repairing the origional - I'll try your recommended chap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Please could anyone tell me what they think is the problem?
996 1999 Carrera 4
Running fine with perfect gear selection. I one journey to work ( 35miles) all this happened :
Coming to stop at a set of traffic lights as I dipped the clutch to stop the revs dipped and the car jolted - like the clutch had not disengaged and then at rest it jolted out. ( put it down to me)
Then Third gear on light throttle started to whine - is this my imagination I thought? All other gears quite.
Then I put it into 6th and it jumped out of gear - re engaged it and it was fine - later it jumped out again and would not stay in gear tryed it 10 times and it just kept popping out like it had not been engaged fully.
Got home and started manouvering into the garage and I had the jolt symtom again!
Got it into the garage and just went through the gearbox raising the clutch in each gear to check engagement and it seemed to engage two gears at the same time ( car wanted to move forward but seemed to be locked).
Then even with the gear stick in nuetral the car was still in a forward gear ( not sure if it was first)
I went back to selecting the gears and it wouldnt select at first but then clunked in and Now it selects all 7 gears!
Is this a known problem - one that anyone has ever experienced before?
Is it cable adjustment - internal selector forks maybe?
My next questions follow along the route of - costs and recommended specialist.
Hope someone can advise.
Many thanks
My advice is do not start the car and do not drive it
There sounds to be a gearbox fault but the clutch not disengaging as well is bizzare
Symtoms of a separating gearbox
Describe all this to an indie capable of the repair and have him recover it
The box is cable controlled and anything wrong with any of the will have selectors in a confused state
But again the clutch issue points to something else or an "as well as"
Is the clutch or was the clutch biting on the floor or near the top has this position now changed after these events?
Hi - Thanks for reply
The clutch is bitting at a good point ( not really low or near the top) it feels fine and it hasnt changed - even when fault occured. Its like it was still half in gear ( if that makes sense)
It does feel like a selection fault - just wondered whether this was something that happened before and is cable operated problem.
Is there any reputable independent Repairers in the Daventry Banbury area who you can recommend.
Any idea how much a box is?
Is changing the box an engine out job?
Check the linkage and cables at the gearbox end first though. The plastic clips have a nasty habit of breaking.
The box will come out by itself - you don't have to remove the engine. If you need to get the gears off the shafts you need one helluva hydraulic press, and some very sturdy tooling.
IMHO you would be best to get it sorted by an indy with experience of these boxes. Mike at Sports & Classic in Knutsford has a good reputation, and is reasonably priced.
I believe Francis Tuthill specialises in the early 911's - not so much in modern stuff.
Thanks richard - helpful advice.
I checked the cables and adjustment - all ok - unfortunatly.
So its box out time - good that the box on a 4 comes out without engine out - makes life easier.
Ive found another box for £1400 so might do the swap and look at repairing the origional - I'll try your recommended chap. Tuthills were very helpful and only 3 miles from me - they are specialist in the older 911 so maybe not the guys for this job.
I drained the oil out and found some plastic bits in the drain tray - only small but they looked a bit chewed up - dont know what plastic components there is in there - selector tips maybe?
I reckon there is a gap in the market - there is alot of Carerra's out there racking up the miles and a reckon box is £4700 - and tuthill quoted £600 to fit it. That a chunk of money on a £15K car.
I'll post the final results just in case it helps anyone else.
Cheers
