I recently upgraded my break pads to the Porsche Sport Pad. Dramatic increase in breaking performance relative to the stock pad. However, after a about a week of it being relatively quite, the breaks have started squeaking to high heaven. Is this normal? Could the pads have crystalized?
I only ask because I recall them not making as much noise as recently as last week. And nothing significant has changed since then.
Thanks for your thoughts.
Did you brake in your breaks?
I have no idea about the compound of the Porsche "sport pad", never heard of it. If it is a track pad, then the squeal you hear is very normal and, for all practical purposes, cannot be fixed. That's why most folks switch between street and track pads, and it's so easy on these cars. A high friction compound pad will usually result in accelerated rotor wear also, another reason they are not well suited for daily driving. Some of the more aggessive track pads are also not very effective when cold (but I doubt a dealer would have sold you a pure race pad). The standard OE pad is hard to beat for daily driving.
The pads aren't Porsche's competition pad--it's a mid-grade. I think it's essentially a Padgid Blue. I didn't "break them in," though, other than taking them out on the track right after they were installed.
Yeah, I would love to be able to switch back and forth between sport and normal pads, but I haven't amassed any of the necessary tools and, living in an apartment, don't really have the space to work on my car. Maybe here soon, though.
You might want to consider using the Padgid Yellow for track use, and paying your shop to switch them if you don't have that capacity right now. The one you are using is probably better than the OE pad for track, but it's not as good as the Yellow, and neither is going to be satisfactory for daily street use.
Do you have a Porsche P/N ? Are they making more or less brake dust than the stock pads?
