I am buying this car for sport purposes mainly and hope to do modifications on it for tracking. I will also use it as my go to work car, so its sort of a daily driver as well.
Any idea how much added weight the heated and power seat options will add? Are we talking more than 50 lbs?
Why do people get power seats? Aren't seats "set-and-forget?"
I'm 5-10 and my wife's 4-11. You think we could "set and forget"?
Some people have back issues. Namely me. 2 operations, and still not normal but better. I find myself changing the seat heights, reclining back, seat angle, frequently to a comfortable position only to find that in one position for awhile, I need to adjust it to a new position. Wish I didn't but I do. The lumbar support is also being adjusted frequently, and having electric seats makes it so much easier. I also like to position the seat all the way back when exiting, then when entering, push the memory button, and voila back to normal position. Makes exiting the car much easier esp. with that super large diameter steering wheel. And in tight parking spots.
I also have a "hunker down position" when I want to play with the cars performance: I'll be traveling along, hit button 2, seats and mirrors adjust to a lower position, and ready to scoot.
For me I wouldn't have a car without it. I could see for tracking, losing weight would be advantageous. I doubt I will be on the track.
Another thing. I hate it when I have the car parked or taken in to the dealer, and when I get back in, my favorite position has been changed. Just hit the memory switch, no fuss, no muss.
Heated seats don't add that much weight (we are only talking wires here) but the motors for power seats will add some significant weight. Looking back to
BMW
stuff I am familiar with, losing power seats may save you about 60lbs. However, the
cayman
has lighter seats to begin with, and even the "standard" seats have power recline, which means the difference between the standard seat and the power seats will not be as significant. Maybe 30-40lbs saved?
I just found this old post via a search.
It’s hard to imaging that a couple of motors would weigh 30 to 40 lbs. When people “lose power seats” like you mention, I think they replace them with racing seats, which don’t recline, and are basically hard shells with little padding.
I just test drove a
Cayman S
with power seats, and I’ve got a line on another. I’m curious if anyone has any accurate numbers about how much more the power seats weigh.
I don't know how much it weighs, but as mentioned, sure tis convenient for retention of the outside mirror settings and seat positions.
I have my key with 3 settings, and wife has her key with 2 settings (the third is mine for when I drive with her key).
Plus enabling the auto-rotation of the right mirror is nice for parking.
On the downside, I have yet to figure out why sometimes the key doesn't auto call up the first setting?
Track detriment: I haven't a clue, but first thing I'd do to drop weight would be to lose the Bose multispeaker sound system and remote CD changer, which I almost never use.
For most young guys, this would not be an issue, but for older guys like me, the power seats are more comfortable than the standard seats. And like other posts, on long trips, I find I slightly adjust the lumbar and rake from time to time.
In the end, great seats and a great car.
When Road and Track compared the CS with a Z4M Coupe, they commented on the better CS seats. Ed
Amen to that. I have a third memory position unused, you have given me and idea. Thanks. Ed
