In the photos it looks like the fog light bulb was also replaced with a higher temperature one.

I ran the wires up to the washer nozzle as others have done.

Suggestion
I tested them with a 9-volt battery and they produced what I would call a clean, white light (apologies for the low-caliber description).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was cruising through Ebay and saw these lights available:
USA Facelift 06 07 08 Porsche Cayman 987 Clear LED DRL Light Bar Fog Light Trim | eBay
I've seen the complete spar replacement kit that completely replaces the fog but not this before and my search-fu hasn't brought up anything. Anyone have any idea as if these are a quality part or are something that'll just burn out after a little while?
Thanks!
tabrin, the seller seems to be dealing with a lot of DEPO parts which is a taiwan manufacturer. you can check with them if this is the actual supplier.
if it is DEPO - they do make a lot of light parts - check out planet 9 and other websites for the reviews of the lights.
Nice find! Thanks for posting the link. I'm interested too, but would like someone else to be the guinea pig. I wonder whose spar is longer (cuz size does matter), the one in the link or Joe's?
I'm not sure how I feel about the look of fogs and LEDs. I'm kinda a less-is-more, keep-it-simple guy. I'll be interested in seeing some pictures once someone does install them.
In the euphoria of buying my
Cayman
a couple years ago, I purchased Joe's
LED
spars. They are OK. I think they clean up the look of the front, downsides being loss of fog light and from close up the bare
LEDs
look a bit unfinished (when showing my car to a buddy, that was his first comment - "those aren't OEM, are they?"). The ones linked above retain the foglight and might look closer to an OEM product, so it would be nice for a guinea pig to step forward, although I doubt I would spend another $250 on
LED
spars no matter how good they look.
One thing I'd be concerned with is the color temperature of those
LEDs
. They could end-up being bluish if over 5000K. In the photos it looks like the fog light bulb was also replaced with a higher temperature one.
Keep in mind that OEM HIDs are 4300K and stock Halogen bulbs are around 3000K. Ideally, you'd want the spar's
LEDs
, fog lights, and
headlights
to be about the same color temp. Otherwise it will just look weird. I'd want someone to view this in person to verify. Photos of bright lights can be misleading.
Excellent
points
! Speaking of stock halogen bulbs (apologies for a slight detour from original topic), is there an after-market replacement halogen bulb that is closer to 4300 degrees?
No experience with these, however I would just like to say that plunking down $250 is nothing to sneeze at. My worries would be reliability and most importantly, customer service. I have Joe's SPARS on my car and although they've failed before, the excellent customer experience I've had with Joe is worth it's weight in gold. Something that's hard to match with some eBay sellers.

Greetings! I'm a newbie here. I just acquired a '07
Cayman S
and addressing the lack of DRLs was an immediate concern of mine. I ordered a set of Joe's
LED
spars/guards combos and wasn't entirely smitten with the non-OEM look. I actually came across this thread while seeking alternatives. I followed the OP's link to eBay and also found the same set being sold by Unique Style Racing for $290 (link here:
https://www.uniquestyleracings.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=60_65_172_362&product_id=765
), whose website shows the DEPO mark, so I'm thinking they are of trustworthy quality----fingers crossed! They were also just added to Maxspeed-Motorsports for $350 (
http://www.maxspeed-motorsports.com...orsports.com/store/p465/Porsche_987_Cayman_Led_Daytime_Running_Lights_NEW.html)
. They were cheaper on eBay at $255 (link here:
USA Facelift 06 07 08 Porsche Cayman 987 Clear LED DRL Light Bar Fog Light Trim
), so I sent a few questions to the seller and he was quick to respond and sent me some photos because I wanted to clarify the sheen (see below). I was pleased enough, so I crossed my fingers (again) and ordered.
They arrived well packed and appear to be high quality to me. They have the proper E-mark for legality, which was nice to see. I tested them with a 9-volt battery and they produced what I would call a clean, white light (apologies for the low-caliber description). I compared them to my factory Xenon lights and they were a pretty close match. While not perfectly matched, their light color seems to be a closer match than Joe's LED spars, in my opinion. This quick test boosted my confidence and I dropped them off to be painted Basalt Black Metallic. The plastic itself is the raw, molded ABS, so it's not super glossy, but it's not flat/matte either. I was going to leave them as-is, but decided to just have them painted and cross my fingers (yet again) in the hopes the installation would pan out.
Like a schmohawk, I forgot to snap a photo when I had them lit up with the 9-volt battery. However, I did get some photos to share with everyone regarding the product as shipped. They should be installed by next week and I'll follow up with the results.
From deliberating on the risks of a 987.1 vs. 987.2 and finally plunking down on a first gen, to the myriad ways of customizing and modifying these beautiful gators, I've had lots of crossed fingers during this whole shebang. I hope my fingers don't get stuck!!
I subscribe to a newsfeed on facebook called "
Porsche Cayman
Club" and someone posted some photos of these aftermarket
LED
spars we're talking about. He says he loves them!
I finally got these lights installed and working. When I tried to remove the factory spar from the plastic housing it clips on, it started to crack so I decided to just order a new set of the plastic surrounds and keep the originals unmolested in case I want/need to reinstall them. I ran the wires up to the washer nozzle as others have done. The yellow wire that can be used as a switch is not connected to anything, so they are on if the ignition is on. There is a slight delay (about 15 seconds) from the time the key is turned on to when the lights turn on. I don't know why, but it's consistent so I'm not going to worry about it. The light output at night matches the factory HID xenons quite well, but not the running light / city driving light that's housed within the fog light area. They are pretty bright at night, but during the day they are not as noticeable as I'd hoped. Here are some photos of the install process.
Great Mod!
Spezzy, I have a question ... you said "When I tried to remove the factory spar from the plastic housing it clips on, it started to crack so I decided to just order a new set of the plastic surrounds and keep the originals unmolested in case I want/need to reinstall them." Where did you order the plastic surrounds? I cannot find them. thanks!
those look pretty nice, just when I tell myself I'm done modding my
Cayman
, something cool like this comes out that doesn't break the bank. You def have to swap in some
LED
white bulbs in those fogs though to get it all to match.
I recently swapped my Low and High beam bulbs for white
LED
's to replace the dated yellowish halogen and love the look, followed then by white
LED
's for the fogs... and now I'm afraid I want these too, damn you Planet 9 !
