We certainly altered one of the two components lists (hence no longer any amplifier not found message), but I was pretty certain it was the other one (not that it makes sense now I think about it).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've just completed fitting a used PCM2.0 into my 2003 C2 Cab (replacing the CDR23), fits great, powers up, but... No sound. Initially, the unit said it couldn't find the phone (not fitted) and the amplifier (also not fitted), having taken it into my local independent these messages are now cleared, but still no sound (The only MOST input, the CD changer works fine).. Using his system tester, it appears that the 'MOST bus required components' include an amplifier, so now i'm wondering if the PCM2.0 needs one? I'm aware that the PCM2.1 has 2 variants (one with internal amp and one without), but hadn't heard anything about the pcm2.0. The PCM appeared to have been coded for a LHD Boxster, but I think we changed that back to the correct config. Could this be part of the issue? All help gratefully received! Andy

POST 2Original post

PCM2.0 can be used with or without an amplifier - there are speaker connections on the PCM unit, which I presume you have plugged in. It sounds like a coding issue to me. You should remove the amplifier from the MOST required components. Perhaps it disables the speaker outputs if the amplifier is coded in the MOST components. Edit: Sorry - Andy!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the welcome Richard! Thanks also for the useful information, I didn't realise you could alter the list of MOST required elements..-I presumed it was a fixed list. That sounds like it's the issue, as the speaker connections are plugged in. Given I've impinged on the seemingly endless goodwill of my indy enough for one day, I'll have another go via my local Porsche dealer this week. Thanks for your time.

POST 4Original post

You should find two lists "Actual Components" (which should list the ones actually connected" and "Required Components" (the ones which you can code present/not present. Just go to the coding position number which shows the amplifier, select 'without' and press F8 to code. If you are anywhere near me, I'd be happy to have a go with my Porsche tester.

POST 5Original post

Just another thought. I think the PCM security code has to be programmed into the DME. Did you do that?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I didn't know about the security code and the DME, so we definitely didn't do that. Is it actually a code specific to my PCM unit or a general PCM coding option? We certainly altered one of the two components lists (hence no longer any amplifier not found message), but I was pretty certain it was the other one (not that it makes sense now I think about it). Given that the units sound options still don't have a fader option, I think it might be still in Boxster config. Thanks for the kind offer of assistance. I live in the North West, but my work often takes me to West London, so if I have no joy with Porsche, I'll be in touch. Thanks again.

POST 7Original post

I'm not 100% sure if the code needs to be entered. One of the other chaps on the forum has recently done what you have, so hopefully he will chime in. Here's what the retrofit instructions say about programming it: 8. Programming PCM2 with PST2 8.1 Activate PCM2. 8.2 Read out PCM2 fault memory and erase. 8.3 Match the MOST required installed components list to the actual installed components list. 8.4 Code the PCM2 according to vehicle type, versions, country-specific tuner settings and MOST switch. 8.5 Check MOST components. 8.6 Activate navigation in the "instrument cluster" control module system. 8.7 After programming is finished, read out the fault memory of all systems, remedy any existing faults, and erase fault memory. It doesn't mention security codes, but in the workshop manual it does say something about entering the Porsche IPAS security code. After replacing PCM with a new unit, the manual also says this: Switch on the PCM2. If the PCM2 cannot be switched on, or the PCM2 switches on but no music can be heard, switch off the ignition, remove the ignition key, close the doors and lock the vehicle. Wait until the alarm system LED flashes normally . Unlock the vehicle and switch on the PCM2 again. I can't think it would be that easy though, and I am sure you will have done this in the last day or two anyway.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I tried the lock and unlock idea, but no joy. I'm really hopeful that it's a coding issue, rather than the internal amp on the PCM is broken, so fingers crossed.. The intention is to run it past Porsche later in the week. I'll let you know! Thanks for all your help, -much appreciated.

POST 9Original post

Hi Andy, I'm probably the guy Richard referred to as I recently retrofitted PCM 2 to my 03 Targa with sound package amp and CD changer (no Bose). My local Indy (Steve Bull of Devizes) did a lot of the work including the configuring whilst I watched and assisted as necessary! My PCM 2 was from a left hooker and a Boxster, but the reconfiguring with the PST easily sorted that. I assume you have connected correctly all the necessary connectors to the back (I have a PDF file of the Connector Assignment diagram but cannot seem to upload it here - PDF not supported!!). It did not need a security code, but we did initially miss connecting one of the speakers. The only problem we had was that during the coding we didn't correctly configure the 'no phone fitted' aspect and I kept getting an error on the PCM upon switch on which I had to clear each time. Steve Bull subsequently cleared that by going through the PST configuration again. The only thing I can think of is that point Richard made concerning 'amp fitted not fitted' and that may have been incorrectly coded. Hope you sort it. Regards David

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks David, When you say fit the necessary connectors to the back, all I did was replace the like for like connections from my CDR23. Ie Black power one in the lower position, the brown speaker one above, with the yellow one to one side and the most one as well. Should I have changed the pin positions within the plugs as well? I'll have a good look round for the respective wiring diagrams.. Glad yours was sorted out, gives me some hope! My local OPC have suggested it's an hours job to code (£150!).. Sounds a bit OTT, so am going to ring another Porsche centre. Thanks again.

POST 11Original post

Have a word with Mike at Sports & Classics if you are anywhere near Knutsford.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Richard, Mike looks after my car (highly recommended), and he was the afore mentioned indy who gave up an hour of his time for nothing to try and assist. It sounds like we may have missed something on the setup pages, but I don't want to impinge on his good nature more than I already have! I'll confirm the wiring thing before going any further.

POST 13Original post

Drop me an email if you want the wiring diagrams, but I am pretty sure you have done everything you need to.

POST 14Original post

There was/is no need to change pin positions. I've PM'd the connector diagram to you. £150 is ridiculous - that's more than the total job with my Indy cost!! However, I don't think you will get it much less with an OPC - they will probably charge 10 mins each for getting out/putting away the PST and 40 mins to test!! Do you have another Indy near you? Certainly if you live anywhere in southern England it would be worth seeing Richard - if he can't sort it nobody can. David

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks again, I've just removed the PCM to check the connections, all appears ok. As a double check of the speaker circuit I plugged in the CDR23, it worked perfectly. Now i'm wondering if we never got to activating the PCM properly again (hence the cdr23 working fine). The second porsche centre I tried insisted that I needed the Chassis number of the PCM donor car to get into the appropriate part of the software(!), so no joy there either. I'm heading to the SE with work in the next week or two, so if Richards kind offer still stands we can get to the bottom of it.

POST 16Original post

Yes - the offer still stands. I'll email you my contact details.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Richard, Your kind offer is very much appreciated. I'll email you in the next couple of days. Cheers, Andy

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update.. Many thanks to Richard, we spent a good hour configuring both the car and the head unit but to no avail. After further consultation with Porsche, they informed me that the unit (Becker 6632 996.642.214.05) is only compatible with cars that have an external amp already (ie BOSE/enhanced sound package) and such the PCM is an expensive paperweight.. Is that information correct? -Who knows, but I'm out of options! So, in order to get over my disappointment I'm having an Alpine All in one fitted at the weekend, with integrated bluetooth, and iphone with digital TV/radio added. The only advantage of having the basic package is that the MOST bus issues aren't so tricky (i'll lose the CD changer), ie there are no optical amplifier/speaker issues. Many thanks to those that offered assistance (especially Richard), and I hope this will be of use to others considering the install.
