The PCM in my 2010 Cayman S with Bose and Navigation died. It is rebooting over and over and the text is in German. The dealer is quoting $3300 to replace.
I'm thinking about going for an aftermarket solution.
Any advice?
Be prepared to use many curses and expletives regarding Porsche's selection of MOST-bus components.
Three recommendations: Check the usual "auction websites", check with P-car recycling companies (they advertise in Panamara, etc.), and consider putting a WTB (want to buy) ad on ******** / PCA - plenty of people stripped their Caymans to convert to race cars - you may find another that would be plug-and-play and much less expensive.
I've got a perfectly good one from my 2010 that I updated to the newest maps not long ago. Drop me a line if you're interested.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I might take you up on your offer Shawn. I'd just like to better understand what I'm getting into if I'm going to replace the unit myself.
I found some nice videos about how to remove the old PCM and it looks pretty easy.
According to this thread the PCM is locked to your car:
http://www.planet-9.com/987-cayman-and-boxster-electronics/42133-cdr30-pcm-3-0-conversion.html
So I'm guessing I would have to hope the dealer is willing to unlock the new PCM for me.
Another option is to have an aftermarket installer put in a new radio and amp. This looks like it will cost around $1600. The upside is that I will get new features like CarPlay. The downside is that I will need a new microphone placed somewhere and I will lose integration with the dashboard information display.
I also found there is a place that claims that it can repair Porsche PCMs:
Stereo CD DVD Navigation Plasma LCD TV, DJ Equipment Repair
I'm guessing the could cause the PCM to also need to be unlocked again, especially if they replace the hard drive.
I ended up getting a new stereo and I love it! I had it installed by AudioLab in Laguna Hills. These guys are true experts. They have the OEM subwoofer hooked up and also the USB port under the armrest. All speakers are firing except the dash center.
Here's what I got:
- Kenwood DMX-905S (just released)
- JL Audio XD600/6
This system sounds great. Better than OEM.
For those wondering, the loss of instrument integration is really no big deal. Without the PCM, the instrument clock becomes independent of the stereo. Important stuff like TPM, range, and mileage keep working.
The radio trim matches the OEM color very closely. Very happy with the result. The amp is installed under the passenger seat. It does not interfere with the seat at all but they did have to take out the seat to install the amp. This caused the PSM failure light to turn on. However, this went away after driving a minute.
