I had replaced a failed headlight switch in the fall with one off of Amazon (made in China).
Leading evidence: 'Replace failed headlight switch in the fall' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check actual bulbs first' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

On my ROW car, the side markers are only used for the turn signals and do not illuminate when the city/headlights are one.

Agreed, best to start with checking the actual bulbs first.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had similar behavior with my driver side halogen. The headlight mounting plate had cracked where the electrical connector was attached. That crack caused the connector to move back slightly when the headlight was inserted. It was just enough play to only partially seat with the connector in the headlight. A new plate fixed it.
Pull out your passenger headlight and check the alignment and sturdiness of the connector at the back of the mounting plate. If its misaligned or flexes at all your headlight may only be making a partial connection.
You can find used plates on eBay. New ones are $160. Part #

Chances are VERY likely the wiring is all cracked and falling off inside the headlight itself. Might want to remove them and take a peek before you short them out. These cars are getting very old and the wiring turns to junk over time. I taped each wire by hand in mine and should have used liquid tape to cover them......next time for sure...lol.
For the wiring harnesses:

After checking the wiring and connectors, you might need a new headlight switch. I had to replace mine.
I'm the one offering the replacement harness if that turns out to be the issue.
I'm also the US distributor for Retrofitlab who offer the projector upgrade kits for the 996. Anyone that has it will tell you the difference in light output is nothing short of amazing.
Finally, I also offer installation service of both the harness and the RFL kit. Hit me up if you need assistance!

Agreed, best to start with checking the actual bulbs first. As for the side marker lights, depending on what market you car was built for determines whether they light up with the lights one or not. On my ROW car, the side markers are only used for the turn signals and do not illuminate when the city/headlights are one.
Thanks for the answers. These are the litronics, which I understand is considered an upgrade from standard headlight although I don't know how. Grok says the low beam is the DS2 bulb, which appears to be ok. Does the pigeon if take the H7 high beam? How can I tell if it Xenon or halogen?
Your Retrofit kit is beautiful. I think your kit on a standard headlight is a fantastic upgrade. I replaced a failed headlight switch in the fall.
Not entirely sure if this metal box is a ballast to the high beam, low beam or both. Grok says the H7 bulb, if Xenon, requires a ballast.
This is the ballast?
Anything look unusual here?
The bulb in your projector is a D2S HID bulb. The bulb below the projector is a H7 halogen bulb for high beams.BTW, there is a separate retrofit lab kit for the electronic lights. It only replaces the projector assembly so your lights will still look 100% OEM. The light output however, is 10 times better.
Just noticed your pictures. Your wiring harness looks excellent. I dont see that very often! The metal box is a ballast that powers the HID bulb. When the high beam is on, the halogen bulb below the projector is supposed to come on. The connector that you pointed out is for the leveler. If your car did not have the Litronic lights from the factory, but were put in later, you would not have the appropriate harness to plug into that connection. The lights should work fine otherwise.
Thanks for clearing that up. So the litronics probably aren't original to the car. Not surprising as my car is highly modified by prior owners. So now guilty free I think your standard RetrofitLab kit is the way I'd like to go & sell the litronics, once I resolve the current issue.
I have done a few sets over the past year, now that Im using InstaPak foam packaging with much success. Also, the 996.1 Litronic lights are less sensitive in shipping than the retrofitted halogens.
Whelp. Pulled both bulbs on driver's side and they seem to have intact filaments (both turn signals operate properly, just no parking light on driver side, no bright or flash to pass on driver's side). I had replaced a failed headlight switch in the fall with one off of Amazon (made in China). Will order new one off FCP Euro....
You're sure the plug is seating all the way with the lights installed like post #2 references? I had some weird stuff going on with my passenger headlight which ended up being just that.
