Im assuming the "service now" light came on cause it was due for a service. Well zi performed it myself but never figured out how to turn off the "service" light. Would that cause the "check engine" light to come on?

question:
What is the best and cheapest code reader to buy. I just want to be able to diagnose trouble codes and reset them. It also has to be able to reset the "service light".
Thanks
Don't know about the cheapest, but the check engine light has nothing to do with routine scheduled maintenance. I think any code reader will read that since it is usually a standard error with engine emissions.
Go to AutoZone or any major chain and they'll read the code(s). Could be as simple as a new gas gap.
There's a thread discussing cheap code readers that can do the reset - but that's not your priority at the moment.
I just ordered the Schwaben by
Foxwell
Professional
Porsche
Scan Tool from Pelican Parts. They had a 10% off deal on parts going for PCA members just last week so it ran just a little over $200. I saw it in the most recent Panorama. It will do what you want. It doesn't have all the capabilities of the Durametric but I didn't also have to buy a PC laptop which is required to use the Durametric nor is it limited to three VINs as is the "Enthusiast" version of the Durametric. Also, the Durametric doesn't work with Apple which is what I have. The
Foxwell
is stand alone when connected to the car but does have to be registered prior to use and any subsequent software upgrades must be done on a PC. I'll use my friends desktop PC for this. We will see if it is as good as it sounds. Should be here some time on Friday. I do need to reset my "Service now" light. I'll post an update as soon as I check it out.
UPDATE: At this point I would say don't rush out and buy this. So far it has done nothing more than a cheap $30 scanner would do. It won't reset the "service now" light and won't reset the "oil change" light either. It does specifically say it will reset the oil service light. It says it will read and clear codes. It did read and I had no codes so not sure if it will actually clear codes. I have emailed the company - in China - and asked what is going on and am waiting for a response. It isn't user friendly to do updates on the computer either. When you register your device and request updates you are sent a "Zip" file. When you open it you get all kinds of warnings telling you NOT TO! That is scary! I did but then did a full antivirus scan and nothing showed up. If I do get an email response I'll post another update. One last thing: This is not returnable to Pelican Parts. They specifically state: "
This item is non-returnable except for warranty replacement." "
ECS Tuning sells this also but does not state that.
